Question System Freezing and FPS drops!

Hi,

I've been playing GTA V (FiveM) on very high settings, consistently getting around 140 FPS at 1440p resolution. My CPU usage hovers around 20%, while the GPU runs at 99%, which, from my research, seems normal and even desirable. I've been playing without any issues for about two weeks.

However, yesterday while playing, I noticed a problem. While my CPU usage has increased slightly to around 25-30%, the GPU, which usually stays at 99%, now fluctuates significantly—dropping to 65% or even as low as 10% before spiking back to 99% within 2-3 seconds. This is causing massive FPS drops and noticeable lag.

I've checked all my drivers, performed RAM diagnostics, and stress-tested the system without finding any issues. I'm concerned this might indicate an impending GPU failure.

For context, I'm running 7GB/12GB video settings, so I'm not maxing out my resources.

Specs:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2
  • OS: Windows 11 Home
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
  • CPU Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE (dual tower, 6 heat pipes)
  • RAM: 32GB at 3600 MHz (2x 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro)
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT Mech 2X OC Edition
  • Storage: 1TB Netac SSD, 250GB Integral NVMe M.2 SSD (R-3350MB/s, W-1350MB/s)
  • PSU: Golden Field GPG 80+ Gold 650W
  • Monitor: ACER Nitro XV282KK @ 144Hz

I've run OCCT, with CPU temps at 55.2°C and GPU at 50°C. Benchmarking with Heaven at 2560x1440, Full Screen Ultra, I got 179 FPS.

Do you think this is a sign of a failing GPU, or could there be another underlying issue?

Thanks for your help.

I've heard of the brand since I have access to them in this country, but they are quite literally expensive paper weight. You might want to source(borrow, not buy) a reliably built unit like one's made/sold by Corsair, Seasonic, MSI or Deepcool's higher end stuff and see if the issue persists.

BIOS version for your motherboard? Used DDU to remove all GPU drivers in Safe Mode, to later install the latest driver sourced from AMD's support site in an elevated command?
