My gaming computer I recently built randomly hangs up at certain points. Everyting stops responding and after a good 2-3 minutes everything is back to normal. To find out what was going on, I opened task manager during one of these "events" And, surprisingly, I found that system idle processes were at 99 cpu usage! Why is this so? Could this be some sort of a virus? If not, how can I fix it?

Solution

He's talking about process usage, not processor temperatures.

As for the 99% usage: System idle process always uses up a huge chunk. As I'm typing this, my System Idle Process is using up 84%. It's much more likely that some other software is causing your computer to hang.

I would suggest running some virus scans, to make sure everything is up to par. If that still hasn't solved it: Monitor the processes using the most resources (barring System Idle), watch which process is hogging CPU time, and try killing that process.

System Idle Process is the measurement of the percentage of time the CPU is not doing any work or 'Idle'. If it is at 99% then the windows is telling you that the CPU is spending 99% if it's time doing nothing.

Thanks for all the info guys. It turns out that as @powerbolt and @mlga91 stated, it is actually quite normal. But, I'm still experiencing problems nonetheless... Especially, I've noticed that everything seems to hang up after my computer wakes up from sleep mode. Could this be a sign of some sort of a hardware issue?

During wake up it is normal to experience some lag. It`s like a person waking up that you cannot find your center of gravity. It works the same way, you know hardwares, mechanical and electrical components, start up.

Have you solved the 99% idle process? Try to run CC cleaner or PC optimizer to optimize your settings.
