When creating a system image in windows 7, i am unable to save it on my hard disk. This means i cannot choose my D: drive. (windows is installed on my C:drive) When i choose "on a hard disk", it refreshes with "looking for backup devices" and it finds none. The only way is to choose the other option, save back up to "On one or more DVDs" but i have no intention to save it on a DVD. Please help. Thanks!

you can use an external hard disk or an internal. i take it this is a desktop? the important thing is you have to have to seperate physical drives. what you end up with is two identical hard drives complete with files programs and os. kinda takes the fun out of tinkering tho.lol.
the absolute best way ive found to backup your system is to get a second hard drive and use a program like macrium reflect to clone your existing hard drive to your second hard drive. this way if you have a crash you simply boot from the second drive.all your programs remain intact.then clone your second drive to your primary and voila, everythings back to normal.

Hi all, thanks for your replies. I'm using windows method to create system image because i found it more straight forward than programs like acronis true image. When this computer was brand new, i was able to create the system image on D drive using windows method, but now the option is gone.

how do you check if the D drive is on the same partition as the C drive? I would think it's different partition. My D drive has 900 GB free.

aldan: when you say get a second hard drive, do you mean external hard disk?

Thanks all
