I'm getting System restore failed to extract the original copy when trying to use system restore.

Source: %SystemRoot%/Registration
Destination: ComPlusStaging
The restore point was damaged or was deleted during the restore.

I allowed someone to use my computer and am unsure exactly what they've been up to..

Unfortunately it's the only restore point have but seems strange it's the only one as I only created a custom point a couple of days ago and that's gone.

I believe the only Antivirus I have is Windows Defender (Windows 8.1) Disable that?

How does sfc /scannow help?

i wouldnt know if it is as got a very high spec on my pc so wouldnt notice

just google best free antivirus 2015 and read a few reviews and pick the one you feel is best for you

you can use malwarebytes alongside them just the free version you need to scan manually is all

My system is high spec as well so should be fine with Avast. Malwarebytes came back clean. As far as I know the family member ran a portable photoshop but a cracked version. I myself am staying away from these softwares and trying to keep my system 100% clean. I should have kept more of an eye on him but too late now.

I was hoping I could use a system restore point to go back to how things were but as I've already mentioned my only restore point isn't working. Maybe I'm just being paranoid and no major system changes have been made. I've only this PC about about 3 weeks and my OS is very clean and it's how I want to keep it.

Is it strange to be getting System Restore errors with a 3 week old OS? It looks like System Restore max usage is set at 1% (2.32GB) I can't remember if I set that or whether that's default. Current restore point is using 653.94MB

I'm surprised if that's how much is needed for a restore point that I don't have another restore point as well.

As part of trouble shooting the restore error I have there are instructions about to make sure Volume Shadow Copy in services is set to Automatic and is running. When I checked, it was set to Manual and status wasn't running.

What is the default setting for this service? If mine wasn't the default how could it possibly of been changed?

It also said to make sure the system restore service was running but I can't seem to find that service.. Are these settings going to give me another restore point error?
Are restore points generally made with new windows update installs or other things as well? I've just had 28 optional updates decide to install themselves
after being downloaded at least 3 -4 days ago. My windows updates are set to install automatically but why didn't it install them straight away?

I beginning to think my OS may have gone a bit pear shaped..
