I have been noticing a strange problem with my Win 7 64bit. It does not happen every day, maybe once a week or so.

When I boot up the system and the desktop loads, I noticed that all (6 ) of my security (AVG, ZA, SpyBot etc.) program icons in the system tray notification area (next to the clock) don't load. (Program tray .exe files are not being loaded on start-up) I get the network, power, volume icons but nothing else. I should see 6 icons for my security and other start up programs I have loaded, but they don't show. I have to reboot the system three or four times before the tray icons will show. I also have to do a defrag to fix the problem as well. The system works fine otherwise. The security programs run fine when they are loaded, so they are not the problem.

Like I said, the problem of "missing system tray icons" only happens once a week or so. YES I DO have tray notification set to ON. (That is the first place I looked) So that is not the problem.

I tried logging off and back on as administrator. Did not work.

Here is a copy of the event log when it last happened:

Has anyone else seen this happen in Win 7? If it is a program fault by Microsoft, is there a solution?

Thanks for your help.

Solution
try CCleaner software
go to registry > fix all registry issues
go to cleaner > windows > advanced > mark"tray notifications cache" > run cleaner

all of your notifications icon will be back as normal
it worked for me

Yeah, my notification area freaks out from time to time and its realy annoying. Sometimes i click the expand button and it shows up as a huge white space with only 2 icons in there. I usualy just kill the explorer process and then restart it. Sometimes even that wont fix it.
The rebuild icon cache solution fixed the problem for me.

I know this is an old issue, but I also know nobody has solved this problem, and Microsoft doesn't seem to care anymore.

I am happy to announce that I used a program called WinASO Registry Optimizer and it has solved this problem completely!!! I no longer see any task host window nor blank force shutdown screens! It also seems to have sped up both boot and shutdown times!!!

Also, an added plus (the reason for this thread)...and this is another one that MS doesn't seem to have a permanent cure for...all of my notification icons now load every time!!! WOOOOHOOOOO!!! Finally, I found something that just solved all of these problems at once! It ain't free, but it's worth it if you've been banging your head against the wall for ages now, trying to solve these seemingly incurable and annoying bugs.

Now, why the hell couldn't MS solve these f*cking problems? Apparently, X.M.Y. International L.L.P. is far more advanced than MS!

After working with every fix mentioned anywhere on the internet for recovering missing power, network, and volume icons, I consolidated the ‘repair’ into this procedure…

Either manually edit each of the registry keys below or make a .reg file with EXACTLY the content between the dashed lines and run it
==========================================
Put ALL below in a text file named (for example) “NotificationsFix.reg”
—————————————–
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify]
“PastIconsStream”=-
“IconStreams”=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
“HideSCANetwork”=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
“HideSCAPower”=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
“HideSCAVolume”=dword:00000000
—————————————–
The first one deletes two keys that Windows will restore on boot.
The last three tell Windows to NOT hide the icons…the zero value disables hiding.

Restart or reboot after editing/creating the keys, or running the reg file.

Works reliably every time in my Windows 8.1, and I’m sure it will work in Windows 8;
not sure about earlier ones.
