System upgrade for 1080p 60hz ultra gaming

Hello guys I'm planning to upgrade my PC and I would like to know your opinion on it.
I have so many contradiction in my mind right now it's a damn mess.

My current spec:
I5 2500k @ 4500
P8Z68-V
8 gb ran 533 dual channel
gtx 580 POV
750wt PSU

My main idea was to just upgrade the GPU to a MSI 970 as I don't have space for a G1 in my case, but after reading the 3.5 vram "issue" i started to consider to buy a 980 or to wait for a 980ti.
I fear upcoming games will be very demanding on vram.

About the CPU I was considering to go for an i5 4790k but ultimately if my 2500k does not create a bottleneck with my future GPU I will gladly wait for a skylake to change everything.

So, what are your thoughts?

4790k is a 1150 socket, and your motherboard has a 1155. So if you want to do that one you'll have to update the mobo as well.

Going GPU upgrade first sounds about right.
