System upgrade

I'm looking to upgrade my current rig from socket 754 and transition to something different most likely 939 since I think that's pretty much what I'd be limited to with pc3200 but not completly certain.

Anyways the components I plan to reuse are 2x 1gb sticks of pc3200, and 1x WD raptor 74gb hd, and my case and standardized junk. I plan to replace my agp video card with a pci-e card of some sort. My budget is limited to $500-600's for new components.

Here's what I'm looking at currently and debating over.

Now the mobo and video card are more or less definant if I'm sticking to socket 939. The other thing I had thought of but I don't believe would work with out getting new ram was a Pentium D 920 Presler 800MHz FSB 2 x 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Dual Core Processor - Retail $266.00, of course it would require a different mobo along with it.

Anyways assuming socket 939 I'm wondering which would be of more benefit to me as a mmorpg gamer the athlon 3200+ and WD74 gb 10k rpm drive which would allow me to setup a raid or the Dual Core Opteron 165 with twice the cache per core and only 200mhz slower, but has better overclocking potential, but lets just assume default settings on the cpu's.

Also if anyone could inform me more about the pentium option that would be great as well.

wrong wrong wrong wrong. amd 64 3700+ san diego core(233.00). i dont trust jetway,
ABIT KN8 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard (109.99) but i know that is a really good board from newegg.com
the venice is also a really good buy but the san diego core is the same as the FX series and will most likely overclock to FX speeds. another wd? id say get a storage harddrive for much cheaper and way more GB per doller, raid is deffinentally overrated. 250GB can be had for 100.00 with the extra saved cash buy a 6800GS(no ati's just to be futureproof).

I'm sticking with the jetway board if I upgrade to 939 that board. It has lots of overclocking features and OC's as well as DFI Lanparty for alot less money plus a good board layout and performs great. A knowtible site gave it a excellent review. I want a good overclocking board with sli and it fits the bill perfectly. Anyways I'm on a tight budget so the san diego isn't really a option if I'm going to spend that kind of money on a cpu and not get a hd to raid then I might as well go for the opteron since it's dual core and is 2x1mb cachce compared to just 512cache and overclock extremly well and are a better value for amd dual cores than regular X2's are plus overclock higher.

Anyways the main question is which would be better for a mmorpg gamer? Would the added performance from a raid setup and a amd 64 3200+ be outweighed by the extra cache and extra core from a opteron 165 denmark dual core? Essentially it's either a (2X 1.8ghz 1mb) opeteron or a 2ghz 512cache a64 and whatever the boost from raid would be.

Looking into things further I could in fact go for a intel presler dual core 2x2mb cache setup with 1gb of ddr 533 for slightly less than a 939 dual core opteron setup I was thinking of seems intresting now , but that's assuming I can find a good mobo for presler socket LGA775 for the same price as I can for socket 939. So does anyone know of any good LGA775 preseler combatible mobo's with nice overclocking features and pci-e for around $120?

Most of the Pressler duals are being tested on 975x mainboards, although I suspect 955x series are compatible as well, except for the 955EE processor, which requires the 975x....

I don't know if any 955x boards are that low in price yet, check www.pricewatch.com

(WIll the Nforce/Intel chipsets support PRessler yet?)

I've yet to see a game where anything but a $1k Intel Extreme Edition could keep up with a $300 3x00+, honestly, and although the dual cores narrow this gap, the X2 is generally a bit quicker in most benchmarks...

What MMORPG do you play? If its WoW i'd recommend P1 166mhz, with onboard video, and no ram, prolly dont need it :twisted:

The problem with socket 754 is I'm using a 2800+ slowest chip availible for it excluding semprons. I've also got a geforce 6800 agp card which is basically the end of the line for agp cards since it's pretty much been phased out. Lastly socket 939 has dual channel,dualcore, and sli 754 doesn't. I've got the ram thing taken care of allready have 2x1gb pc3200 it's not officially matched, but it's the same model/company so should work fine hopefully, and if not I can always use one stick in the meanwhile.

Ok so the things I'm debating over right now are between a

I do alot of gaming mostly mmo's and a minor to moderate amount of multitasking. The types of games I mostly play for mmorpg's and fps. I primarily play mmo's. On a side note I'd like to be able to use dual view more aggresively if possible. The upgrade is primarly to help with mmo gaming. Which would be more benificial raid and a higher clock speed but with less cache or dual core with more cache per core but slightly slower clock speed?

There's not really anything wrong with my current setup for most scenario's I just want better performance.

cache means little if anything on these amds, and i process media on mine.

if its purely gaming, you might as well save a bit and go fo rht e3200+ and oc to ~2.5/2.6 and get decent results. i know u'll probably LIKE dual core, but definitely nos sure if u NEED it
