System uses 3GB RAM while idle?

Hey again folks,

So I'm back with another Memory question. I am attempting to host a server and play on said server with the other players for a new game on Steam called ARK..

But when I am hosting the server the RAM usage was 8gb so i thought the server took that much to run.

After shutting the server down for an update i realized the serve does not take that much ram but instead my computer is constantly using 3-4gb of the 16GB of ram with just Firefox open. (With Firefox closed it only drops by like 300)

So i was wondering if anyone could help me figure out why it is using this much ram and anyway to lower the amount while i am running the server?

Here is a screenshot of my resource monitor...

I realize there are alot running, however even with Firefox and Chrome running, those two programs are only using 500MB and 75MB to run. Steam is using 134MB.

I dont know What the other programs are which is what i was hoping people here may be able to tell me what they may be.

Thanks though.

I think quite a few programs start when i start my pc and im not sure which ones are supposed to be on start up.

3GB is normal for a system with 16GB (or even 8GB).

(I'm using 3.1GB right now as I type this. It is less if I boot from off, and it is more if I have opened a bunch or programs and closed them again. I can go above 5GB if I have Chrome open with a lot of tabs since it sometimes uses over 2GB itself)

You definitely will NOT be dropping to 1GB. I've never seen that in a long time for Windows unless the system only had 2GB of System memory)

*Windows always tries to buffer as much of the Windows code and program code into System Memory that makes sense to do because that's faster then loading it from the hard drive.

If you open programs and close them then often part of the program remains in your System Memory so it opens quicker the next time.

Windows will also REMOVE data from memory if it needs the space.

Did you not read my question?

I am trying to host a game and play on the same server i am hosting and i want to allow more players in. But my ram creeps up to 14gigs of my 16 gigs that i have...

I am just trying to alleviate the ram that should not be being used right now...

As for Long___T123... I restarted my pc and this is my resource monitor before i opened this web browser to respond...

Best answer so far, This kind of makes sense. I didn't think windows used more memory simply because there is more memory to use lol.

Download ram booster
switch to deep boost

I always take care of my computer, i always check task manager to clean files, delete useless software, disable alot of stuff at "startup" and yet my ram usage is always at 2.5/8 gb, the lowest ive seen it was at 1.4gb, i think all the crap on windows uses alot of ram, i see cortana alone using more than 100 mb :/
