I'm not so sure I like their system as it's quite slow sometimes and little ads here and there.

So I've started looking at other tablet makers for my kids (all under 10). But are there any foamy cases for other tablets or if I want something with significantly good drop protection, am I to stick with Amazon's Fire line of tablets?

from what i have seen, there are tough "kid proof" cases for pretty much any tablet. they might not come out of the box with it, but scan the 100 pages of options on amazon for your chosen model and i'm sure you'll see more than one good option.

for instance i have a Galaxy Tab A9+.

a quick search shows many many options for a kid proof case

figure out what you want to buy and then do the same search with that model. it'll look the same as for mine :)

Kids get any old tablet with an available barebones AOSP ROM, so an old Fire is OK. It's actually a plus if they can't use the Google Apps store so you can sideload the few apps you want them to have.

Old can be too old though. It's up to you to decide if only 2GB of RAM builds character and discipline to not multitask too much.
