Taking a single drive out of a RAID enclosure and reading data off of it with a SATA drive reader. Possible?

I just purchased a Mediasonic ProRaid enclosure with the options of Raid 1, 3, 5, 10, & 0. I don't know too much about Raid storage, but ideally, I want to make a duplicate of the files I'm backing up (so either Raid 1 or 10).

Is there a way, after backing up images to one of the drives through a Raid 1 or 10 configuration, to then take a drive out and plug it into an external SATA drive reader to then read/copy data off of?

I'm using a Mac. The data stored are jpeg & raw photos.

Raid 1 puts the same data on both drives so yes that should work.

The only reason I ask is because I was using a Western Digital My Book Duo set to RAID 1 and the drives aren't readable with a SATA drive reader. When I contacted WD, they said it was because the drives are written in Linux OS format, or something.

The RAID drive has a different header, it cannot be read by SATA controller. It can be read only by the original RAID controller (sometimes other compatible controller).

You can do that with RAID1 only....

Why go though all the trouble to remove the drive? Why not just copy the files from the enclosure directly to the external drive you want to keep another backup for. RAID 1 or 10, or any RAID is not a backup really, it does not protect you from having your files deleted, or from having the bay go bad and corrupting the files, or some virus messing with the files or you or your kids or dog accidentally formatting the drive array and wiping the files. RAID is used for quick recovery of a failed drive, not as a backup. What you want to do is use that RAID setup, then for a backup you just copy the files to another drive to keep separately.
