I have a custom built computer that I want to upgrade until i get the money for a ultimate rig. Its running windows xp home and a 250gb hdd by WD and has 2 gb ddr/ddr2 ram (not sure) intel duo core cpu @ 2.4 and a nvidia 8800 gt alpha dog edition card. It has I belive either a 500-600watt psu (600 I belive) and a cd rom. My question is that what can I get for about 300-400 dollars to upgrade this computer. The case is a full atx tower. I play games like beyond earth, master of orion2, fallout 4, Final fantasy. I have been using WD hdd, corsair memory, asus motherboards. Im not sure what things to get. I have some knowledge of how to install items but not install OS. Im looking to do this in the next few months 1-3. Any help will be of help. My old computer can run games fine except new ones that require 64bit os and more gb ram than i have.

honestly as far as memory goes gskill and corsair are both good. I'd probably just go for whichever one is cheaper of the two. 8gb is the new standard recommended amount of ram imo if you can get that but 4 is good enough if you can't afford the extra 4 gigs. 8320 is pretty good but for the $170 range it's probably a better idea to go with intel, because lower TDP and better single core performance will probably be better for the games you play. Something like the i5-4460 would probably be a better option.
I'm not an intel fanboy, I personally have an fx-8350 in my computer it's just looking back I don't really play enough of the kind of games which take advantage of 8 cores to make the comparatively weaker single core performance...

might be better looking for an older gaming rig or something like hp workstations etc, i got mine free and ou can find soem workstations for 200 etc with 6gb of ddr3, xeon quadcore with hyperthreading etc, and you can get a decent gpu with the money left over. I have a hp z400 for my spare that I modified, plays just as well as my gaming build with the same gpu installed.

Look around, or youc an pick up a used core 2quad for next to nothing but you need to see if your motherboard supports it etc.

well considering that your computer (by modern standards) is quite outdated, you could an additional two gigs of ddr2 ram to address one of the problems.
Your computer could use any of the following components: (for your newer ultimate rig in the future)
New CPU/New Motherboard, New Graphics card, SSD, Larger HDD, Newer version of windows (for 64 bit os)

I don't know much about your CPU and graphics cards but they both look like they were very powerful cards for their time. You could possibly upgrade both your motherboard and CPU, plus add some DDR3 ram, and maybe upgrade your version of windows

I forgot to meantion that my mb is a P5N32-SLI Deluxe.
@questkid44 Its going to be impossible to find that cpu now but I do like the price for the 750ti.
@dantheman0809 Yea they were the best at that time. I am thinking about Win7 pro that can run the games in windows xp mode but far as cpu, memory im not sure what to get. I also forgot to post I dont play anything higher atm due to system @ 1280x1084 but would like to play games at 1080p at most at about 30fps. I have been looking at AMD FX-8320 with the 750ti. For as memory is the gskill better than corsair? I was looking at 4-8gb memory but not sure at what speed. I dont want to spend alot and dont want to bottleneck it.

Plus the fx-8*** series is getting a bit old, it has higher power draw, it gets a lot hotter, and if you wanna dive into AMD you should probably wait for the new Zen series to come out later this year

You could also potentially get the newest line of intel CPU's, skylake, something like the i5-6500 ($200) which allows for you to use DDR4 ram, the newest kind of memory. It would contribute to your build because you potentially wouldn't have to upgrade your motherboard in the future
