I recently decided to try out one of those VPN services which uses openvpn to connect to their servers, which in turn, uses an adapter emulator called TAP-Win32. The problem is that this adapter is restricted to 10Mbps which is somewhat slower than my internet connection. Browsing the net was not to successful in relation to finding a fix.

Does anyone know if this adapter can be upgraded/modified or if another adapter can be used or is available?

In addition I have a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC just sitting around unused as well, can this be configured for use?

Thanks in advance.

A very good question and I'm afraid I cant help you with an answer however, I also use this OpenVPN setup and would like to know.

Do you have a 10Mb up link on the VPN server though? I'm on a 50Mb download speed into my home environment with Virgin media but the up speed is more like 4Mb so when I VPN in, I'm restricted to 4Mb regardless of how good the down speed is on my VPN client device. depending if your using VPN to upload or download data to the client, you will need a 10Mb or better up speed on the server and client to cap out the taop adapter, I'm not aware of that many personal connections that have that kind of up speed.

I was recently upgraded by my ISP from a 6Mb ADSL connection (effective 5Mb down, 0.5Mb up) to a 100Mb fibre connection (effective 95Mb either up or down). The fibre is just restricted to 100Mb total with no separate up/down restrictions. Both speed tests were conducted with the same service and the results for the 6Mb test largely agreed with what I was actually getting, I have not been able to real world test the 100Mb link as I have not found a server which can give me those speeds yet. What really makes me happy about all of this is the fact that my ISP made no charge for the fibre upgrade and just asked for a 12 month contract at the same price as I was paying for the 6Mb connection, roughly US$23/month - what a bargain!!!

In fact on P2P Java memory issues/azurus restrict me to 15 concurrent active torrents which translates to around 1-2Mb down and 4-7MB up. On the odd occasion I find a fast uploader I can achieve individual torrent download speeds of up to 7 MBps (so far). My worry is the other internet and LAN activity may be being bottle-necked.

That is a bargain!

Try the Eve Online game installer to cap your bandwidth, that caps out my 50Mb down speed.

Good luck with the Tap issue.
