Ok guys I'm allocating $600 to upgrade my current pc ( upgrade cpu, mobo, ram, graphics card). I built my current machine back 2007 and haven't upgraded anything aside from HDD, psu and graphics card since then.

This is my current rig

Intel Quad Core 2 duo q6600 (2.4ghz)
Abt ip35 775 socket Motherboard
Corsair 4gb (2x) ddr2 600
1TB HDD seagate
Geforce GTX 560ti
Geforce GTX 460 (used as dedicated physx card)
PSU 750W Corsair HTX

Yes I know this looks old as hell and yeah I know it's bottlenecking my graphics card, however its been working for gaming so far. Mostly has to do with the fact that I play most of my games on my 720p TV so I don't run things that high of a resolution.

Keep in mind I play games on two different monitors:

32" HDTV 720p (native res 1366x768) -- I use this mostly for pc games that work better with a controller (like DMC)
24" LED monitor (native res 1920x1080) -- I use this mostly for RTS and MOBA games (Starcraft, league of legends etc.)

The reason for this need of an upgrade is obvious however its also because my motherboard is failing. It is not distributing enough power to any of the devices directly attached to it.

IT IS TIME FOR AN UPGRADE!

Here are some preferences: I would like to keep this to an intel/nvidia build and I don't want to spend beyond $600 before taxes, however if you can make a good case for an AMD/ATI build then go right ahead I have an open mind. I would like to replace my cpu, mobo, ram, and graphics card for around that price range, however some friends have told me its best just to update my cpu/mobo/ram and wait later for my graphics card, in which case that would be fine since that means the upgrade would be cheaper.

Thanks for any of the help guys. I've been out of the pc building scene for a while now so I really need a refresher course of whats available out there and what I should look into.

I plan to build this sometime in early march when I get my tax refund.

Why not spend what you need to on cpu/mb/RAM/SSD and reuse everything else

15 3570K $220
Asrock Z77 extreme4 $125
2 x4 gig of 1600 MHZ DDR3 , rated 1.5 volt or less $45
Samsung 840 128 gig $90

You will probably need a new copy of windows too if your current version is OEM

I agree with your friends in that you should probably hold off on the graphics card upgrade. Here's what I came up with and it assumes both your current hard drive and optical drive are both SATA drives.

Thanks so much guys for the response

I have a copy of windows 8 and 7 64bit so no worries about OS

buying an SSD sounds like a good idea.

at new egg this is what i got list on newegg:

Intel Core i5-3570K
MSI Z77A-G45 LGA 1155 Motherboard

It's a Combo deal at newegg for $324.98

Corsair Vengeance LP 16gb (2x 8gb) DDR3 1600 for $83.99

Total: $439.64 (includes shipping and taxes)

True but how much of a jump in performance are we talking about here

If my motherboard wasn't failing I would still be using what I would be using, just upgrading my graphics card to a Geforce gtx 660ti

But because the motherboard is dying i need to replace everything (cpu/mobo/ram)

It seems to me at $325 bucks a intel core i5-3570 w/motherboard is the best bang for my buck.

Does anyone know if the extra 30 bucks is worth getting the i5-3570k instead?

Sorry about that.. i missed the part about the failing motherboard 😀 .. if you intend to oc then yes it would be worth the extra 30$.. do you need the 16 gigs of ram?.. otherwise you could get 8gb ram and use the money saved to get the 3570k..

I'm thinking perhaps the save my money and just stay with 8gb of ram and standard i5-3570

I play lots of pc games but since i play them at 1920x1080 or even less (if i play it on my tv) you can tell i'm not hardcore or anything. It's still better than playing on the consoles lol

My pc maybe old my at least it can run DMC max @ 60fps HA! (take that consoles)

I guess I'll buy a new graphics card in the summer then, my Geforce gtx 560ti should be able to hold out til then

(I fear how crysis 3 will ravage my system though)

This is what I would get plus another 560 Ti for SLI (which ever model you have). You have the PSU power for it.
