An app uses the GPS to locate taxi passenger traveling to the same destination was developed in Hong Kong. The app called "TaxiShare" locates people in proximity who travel to the same destination and organize these people to catch the same taxi. The passengers save some money (up to 80%) and ease traffic congestion because there will be less cab on the road (although not so good for the cab drivers)!
The app will scan users using the same app within the range of 250m. A maximum of 5 users can join the group in one taxi (some taxi in Hong Kong have 2 passenger seats at the front and 3 at the back so you can have 5 passenger in a cab). If the passenger who joined the group did not show up, they will be eliminated from the list after 7 minutes.
App is available for iphone, ipad and android smartphones. Download is available from 5-10-2011. The program had the locations of the 1600 taxi rank in Hong Kong and the developer hope that there will be 20000 users for this app.
My though: It would be nice if the program can be configured to use in other cities such as London and New York. Although the developers may already had that planned, but I can not confirm that.
