Hi All

I've had my PC for about four years and in that time have developed a very basic understanding of it. I have installed new memory, graphics cards, motherboards and CPUs but that is as far as I have got. I don't understand all this front bus etc business but would like to learn.

What is the best way to do this? I don't really want to just play around with the PC I have as I don't want to kill it! Ideally I would like to know if there is some kind of college course available (I live in the UK.

How do you lot suggest I start?

Cheers

read the forums, read all the documentation with the software and keep on reading good review sites like THG and Anandtech.

by the end of the year you'll know everything.

Welcome to the Forum!
You've already taken a good step towards learning about computers by visiting pc forums like this one.

To get a grasp on things like "front side bus", or FSB, I'd suggest reading through some of the many guides on overclocking. The FSB is an integral part of that, and is part of the "formula" for calculating the speed at which a cpu operates at.

Here is link to a long post/thread which contains many other links to OC guides that have been posted on the internet in various places. http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?s=e31852fdfdcbbc5aa32913ad1abb3db9&threadid=173635

Also, just lurking around here and other similar forums reading questions & solutions others post is a great way to learn things about pc's.

Just read throught the tomshardware forumns and visit a lot of hardware sites, then if you dont understand something you can ask some1 in the forumns. Most of us would be happy to help.

Don't waste money on computer courses! Learn by reading on the WEB and post your questions in forums like this one.

Usually, we answer the same question over and over, but we like to share our knowledge, the more people wil know computers! The less people will buy Celeron and crappy LE/SE GPU.

It's tricky to use words like AMD or Intel in a signature some users could think your are biased.

DON'T DO IT! BUY A DELL, DooD! If you build your own inside of six months you will be glued to it. Your social life will suffer as you converse on forums with people having handles like Blah, ZeeKfu, Vapor, etc. Your life activities will narrow to the point where you look in a mirror and see a pocket protector with three pens and a twist pencil and you realize: AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm a geek! NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
Buy a Dell! Save thyself!

Welcome!

Seeing as you already have the resources to do it, only thing to suggest is when you have time get on this site for one; there's more sites out there!!! and read, and read, and READ!!! That's what I did. I'm no computer guru like Crashman or Toey or blah and the whole bunch of others I've gotten my answers from not to mention the flames. Tell you this much. Since being a member of THGC I have probably built over 50 computers for people willing to put out the money.

There are college courses out there if you're going for points but the INFO is here! FREE! Can't get better than that.

Best Wishes!

I'm guessing I made a typo? Hell, I don't know how to spell it correctly?

Or do you really not know?
