Tech: F-14 can't be diagnosed

I just picked up an F-14 last weekend, and when I picked it up, I could
start a game, use the flippers (although two were weak), the outhole
kicker wasn't working...then I brought it home.

I powered it up at home, and now it will not start a game, I can add
credits, but can't get it to start a game.

The switches on the inside of the coin door seem to be useless - I
didn't try them when I picked it up, so I don't know if this is new or
not. But without them, I can't do any diagnostics.

I replaced ALL of the fuses in the backbox and the two under the
playfield, based upon the manual on IPDB and this group.

There are no visible signs of wire damage to the coin door, or the
switch. I have ordered a manual, but it's not here yet - and they don't
have a TOPS yet for Sys-11 (although the other ones are great! Own all
- watched 3&4 for my DW repairs)

This is only my second pin, and my first Sys11 - I don't know where to
start next.

What's the display show? How is the CPU as far as battery damage?

It was stored without batteries - thankfully - so no battery damage - I
put brand new ones in, to get past the "Factory Settings" display.

The Display is basically acting like its in attract mode "Fly F-14
Tomcat" - The lights are flashing all over the place.

Per Lloyd's suggestion, I am checking connectivity now...I'm good from
the door to the wire harness plug just inside the door - I'm trying to
figure out which board they go to in back box - it appears to be CPU
1J10, but I haven't confirmed that yet - this is difficult w/o
manual/schematics.

That's the playfield lights are flasing all over not the display led's-
the display will recognize new Credits also and give me a credit
display.

Will the ball thing actually stop it from starting a game???

Floyd - It seems I have conductivity from the coin harness to various
points at 1J10,1J13, the Lower Right Connector on the power supply
board, and the backbox 4 fuse holder and beyond -- There is a beige
wire in the coin door harness that I lose track of , and haven't found
where it hits the board to test that one.

Or for that matter - stop the diagnostic switch from working at all???

Power off, get yor meter out, check continuity from the coin door switches
to the board. That would be a good start. LTG :)

Okay - I made sure 4 balls were in the trough - but it still doesn't
start a game

Dude, if it's in attract mode, that's 95% of the way. It's probably
wires on the switch matrix connectors. I doubt it's anything serious.

Since I don't have the manual yet - can you confirm the switch matrix
connectors?
It appears to be at least 1J10 and probably the one next to it.

Jeff - I already got the manual from IPDB - Unfortunately, even though
this group has noticed it for years, the copy at IPDB - stops at page
44 of 60 - Which means it is missing most of the assembly breakdown
diagrams - and all of the schematics that are on the last several
pages.

When I get my manual, I will try and remenber to fix that problem for
the next guy.

How about downloading PInbot's or another system 11a game? I am working
now or I would just send you my copy of my PinBot manual.

Good Luck,

Jeff

Check your switches in the ball trough, and make sure you have the right
amount of balls in the game.

Sounds like stuck switch(es) somewhere. I'd start with the plunger
switch, that one's famous for that problem... the game thinks a ball is
already to go so it doesn't kick one over. Yes you need all 3 balls in
there before it will start.

Great Idea on the other manual! - It certainly helps to confirm the
wiring.

------------------------------------------

I will begin looking at switches - asap.

MAKING PROGRESS!!
- Rockola with the call....One of the trough switch wires was stuck - I
freed it up and now I can start a game...

However...

I still can't use the diagnostic switch...it appears I do have some
kind of switch matrix issue

If I push the start button,
it goes into game mode for ball1...No ball kicks out,
and then if I hit a flipper button I start getting points!!
If I hit the flipper again - it registers as an outhole drain - ends
the ball, and goes to the next ball.

When I get it into game mode - I can activate they playfield targets by
hand, but the flippers are pathetically weak,
as if they are not getting full power....

......Still looking for help :)

Very carefully inspect the switch assemblies mounted on your flipper
assemblies. If that game has a switch piggy-backed on the flipper EOS
switch, make absolutely positively sure they cannot touch each other.
Rotate the crank by hand and look at the movement the whole way. Make
sure during the movement the two switches do not contact each other. If
the plastic insulator between them is melted or broken and they can
touch even for an instant, that sends solenoid power into the switch
matrix and things get bad fast.

If all that is ok, you need to perform the diode-jumper diagnostic test
on the switch matrix and see if your problems are on the playfield or
the control board. You can also try entering the diagnostics my
manually toggling the switch's input at the board.

The flipper EOS switches seem to be okay - I remember seeing the
diode-jumper test before (Clay's guide perhaps) I will have to find it
again to try that.

I also tested the coils as outlined in Clay's - and it does seem as if
one of the coils is shot - I already brand new ones for all the
flippers, hopefully they will be here tomorrow - so I can swap that one
out asap.

Ok - I got the manual and found the pins I needed to jump for
diagnostics
- jumped them and was into diagnostics - I guess I will have to go back
and check the wiring
from the coin door to the backbox - I got conductivity - so maybe I
have a short - will have to keep looking
