How should I set up my router to perform to the best of its ability?

I play ps4 and feel like the games are laggy and stuttery most of the time

Sometimes it runs smooth, but it's not often

I've looked into portforwarding, dmz etc and tried them out
But I would like to speak to someone who has used these specific routers to find out more about them

The model is technicolor tg589 vac 2

Thanks in advance

First you do not want to be using wireless. There is a fundamental issue with playing game on wifi.

Portforwarding/dmz will not affect the performance. It generally will not work at all if something is wrong when it needs these option. Most games do not need these options at all.

In general games use almost no bandwidth so they put almost no load on the router. Pretty much any router can run games well.

Now if you have overloaded the bandwidth with other devices in your house then maybe you can use router feature but there is only so much you can do. The only real cure for overload is buy more bandwidth.

Why not log into the router, set a static IP for your playstation and give it priority over all other devices? If that helps it would partly explain the sometimes good sometimes not. Also I game on wifi and get 20 ms ping or less and 400 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up... so....your wrong. ac protocol is faster than most rj45 ports just fyi. Playstation 4 I think can use 5G so maybe your signal isnt strong enough and only way to fix that is move the node or client closer or ethernet jack it up lol. Cat5e or cat6 cable only. Hope that helps. If none of it does and you have run a speedtest.net on a browser and all looks good but still laggy. Playstation sucks go by a gaming PC, lol jk dude it could be the game server. Just hard to say without more info.
