Temp files from external hard drive

When using files from an external hard drive, are there temporary files stored on windows somewhere? For example, if I open a document on my external hard drive, modify, save and remove the drive, does windows have a folder somewhere that stores these?

Generally no, if you open a document for example, the application might create a temp file in the folder where the document is located.
But this greatly depends on what you use. if you install an application from the drive, temp files might be created on the local hard drive
