QUESTION: All else being equal (as much as possible) .. Given real world, practical testing .. Q: How much faster is an M.2 NVMe X4 drive, than a similarly priced SATA III 6gb SSD ? …
(This is an old mobo running an ATHLON II 4X at 2.9 GHz.). ... Any other considerations for a boot SSD?

Impossible to answer, since every persons use is going to be different.
What do you consider "real world, practical testing"?
To me, that means things like windows, web browsing, maybe some gaming and so on. In which case an NVME drive is not worth the premium over a SATA drive. At the same price sure why not.
Outside of that, once you get into things like photo/video editing, an NVME drive would absolutely be worth the extra investment.

That being said, for an old system like that, just stick with a standard SATA drive.
