It must be a slow week at THG.

This article belongs on IGN, not Toms Hardware.

"it's for the greatest female characters, which means it's not a list of the "hottest video game chicks" or "top video game vixens." "

once again an article which says one thing, then does the other.

QFT.

I was starting to be afraid I was the only one who noticed that more than half of the "top 50 female characters" barely qualify as characters by any reasonable definition. I'm sorry, but characters from fighting games are not characters. Taki? Aside from a single, short paragraph of background from the game manual, her entire personality consists of jiggling.

If anything, this list illustrates the general scarcity of well-realized female characters in video games.

I've gotta admit, the list was a little disappointing; it looks much like a duplicate of this list:

I was mostly disappointed in the narrow-minded gaming view; look at how many of those are RPGs and action games. What about the MANY other famous games that don't involve women with weapons?

How on Earth did Carmen Sandiego not make that list? Think outside the box people.. this list sounds more like "the top 50 women that appear in games that WE like".

That's actually a great list. Much more detailed than ours. Helluva job by WomenGamers.com. I'm not sure it's really a duplicate, since their list has quite a few characters that aren't on this one, including ones I've never even heard of.

Good call on Carmen Sandiego. I'm actually kicking myself right now. A major, major oversight.

Well, oversights happen; no biggie..

It's easy to get focusing on a particular gaming area.. and I must admit, I'm drawn to those style games too. I would have certainly entertained the idea of Tanya Adams from Red Alert. :) (I think someone already mentioned that in an earlier reply)

Edit: And also, your correct.. the lists are not duplicates.. I noticed a few that appeared on both, but there are definitely some that don't. Plus, when you're creating two separate lists of the best female characters in gaming, there's bound to be a lot of duplicates...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the hypocrisy of this list.

Right at the beginning it states: it's for the greatest female characters, which means it's not a list of the "hottest video game chicks" or "top video game vixens."

And yet, every single character listed has a remark like this:
Pros: Completely eye-popping and disproportionate features
Pros: ... and a killer body.
Pros: She's young, beautiful...
Pros: ...athletic and gorgeous.
Pros: ... a blonde bombshell...
Pros: ... and extremely easy on the eyes ...

Those are quoted from the first 6 "characters" listed. 6 characters, 6 statements about how they're great because they're hot.

Seriously, GROW UP. It's people like you who give videogamers the stereotypical image of a nerdy teenage boy who spends all day gawking at porn, who couldn't talk to a real girl if he were tied down with a telephone taped to his head.

If you want to talk about "characters", then talk about characters. A list like this would be great, in fact, without ANY pictures (or superficial comments about which supermodel / actress / tennis star (?!?!?) should play them in a movie), with the plus side that you wouldn't have to change your shorts three times while writing it.

what about

The girls from Fear Effect?

Already touched on the fact that no KOTOR characters are in there. And, yeah I agree, there are some very very flat (/busty, hehe) characters in there. Dead or Alive characters being good examples, but I mean compiling lists like this are very time consuming, so I won't lay blame. On the other side of the coin, good attempt at including every genre.

I guess noticeably missing are these ones:

Cammy White, Street Fighter - she had her own game... even though it wasn't very good...

Orchid, Killer Instinct - only 3 appearances, but probably the most used character in the entire series in every game

Sylvanas Windrunner - 3 appearances, becoming an integral part of the WoW world now

Other than that... I'd have to say bang on for the rest of the top 50. Some pretty good selections for actresses.... Sarapova... Samus... Yum...

Um...hello? Bayonetta?!
That game was pure action and way to fun not to make the list!
Me being a girl, I found her sexual acts a little unncessary but overall, the game blew my mind and even though I beat it TWICE, I continue to play it over and over again.

Bayonetta has many great features such as her ability to do tourture attacks, her ability to shift into a panther, bats, and a bird, and her ability to to control her hair in her Wicked Weave moves...not to mention the fact that she has guns on her feet! She also has endless combos that have hundreds of possible combinations and many techniques and items that you can purchase to alter your fighting style along with new unique demon weapons you can use!

So, why the hell didn't anyone mention her...or am I just a little too far ahead of you?
