Who makes the best chipset and motherboard and why, i always thought it was Asus and NVIDIA bc or their reputation, but is there any better out there??

Duh! Most ASUS boards over the years have been partial to VIA chipsets. NVIDIA chipsets haven't been around that long but they work well with AMD CPUs. ASUS quality lately has been lacking, and ABIT has the nod right now. MSI had their shot and blew it.

For AMD, Nvidia make best chipsets, best mobo is probably Abit NF7 due to features, price & overclockability, but Epox are good too.

For Intel, Intel make the best chipsets. Abit are again generally well liked there, for the same reasons as their Nvidia AMD boards.

Epox 8RDA+ rev1.1 w/ Custom NB HS
XP1700+ @205x11 (~2.26Ghz), 1.575Vcore
2x256Mb Corsair PC3200LL 2-2-2-4
Sapphire 9800Pro 420/744

ASUS motherboards are overpriced. I agree that the Abit NF7/NF7-S are the best MB for Athlon XP.

And for AMD based systems nVidia really have the best chipset except for the nForce3 150, that is not very impressive. But nForce2 400 and nForce3 250Gb are very good in terms of performance and overclocking.
