So WD has a lot of HDDs (Red, black, blue, purple etc)

What is the difference between them? They can have the same speed, capacity, physical size, cache but the price still differs. Why is that?

Thanks

The difference is in intended purpose and warranty.
-Black is meant for performance and has a 5 year warranty and I assume the build quality is a bit better.
-Blue is for everyday usage and has a 2 year warranty.
-Gold is intended for Datacenters and has a 5 year warranty, but the build quality is better as usage is assumed to be constant 24/7. I read that these drives have 2 spindles for greater durability.
-Green is their economy line and the firmware has some power saving stuff in it.
-Red is for NAS and is similar to the Gold but with a 3 year warranty. Likely has dual spindles
-Purple is for surveillance cameras and carries a 2 year warranty.

Thanks!!!

Unfortunately WD promotes incomplete listings as there are other models (Red pro and Gold are found by "related" with the WD Red. Green? Well, easier to Google find it than find it using WD's own search feature):

Green - - https://www.wdc.com/products/wd-outlet/wd-green.html
Apparently, the old Greens,(which were the "ECO" one of the bunch: good for low usage and backups and designed for light usage,) are now part of the Blue lineup now and the model numbers end with Z. - http://techreport.com/news/29251/western-digital-paints-its-green-hard-drives-blue-in-rebranding - http://techreport.com/news/29251/western-digital-paints-its-green-hard-drives-blue-in-rebranding

Red Pro - Faster spinning version of the Red (7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM) - https://www.wdc.com/products/business-internal-storage/wd-red-pro.html

Gold - Data Center - https://www.wdc.com/products/business-internal-storage/wd-gold.html

Oh alright.

And thanks for the explanation and links!
