The fastest CPU?

Hi, I'm curious as to what the fasted CPU my motherboard can support is?

The board is a Gigabyte D77-D3H.

I'm just curious because I do a lot of CPU heavy stuff. I can't find out what the limit is on the official website, I'm not really educated on hardware and terminology so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Also, could someone tell me what I should look for in the specs? What is it that denotes the fasted supported CPU?

I'm assuming you mean Z77, which is a socket 1155 Intel board. The best CPU for that is the i7 3770K.

Great thanks, so what is the Z77? Is the socket 1155 basically the shape of the CPU socket?

You need to find out if your motherboard is a H77-D3H or a Z77-D3H. The i7 3770k is the fastest cpu you can get but I would only get it if you have the Z77. If you have the H77, I recommend the Xeon e3-1230v2 or 1245v2 depending on whether or not you have a video card.
