The format did not complete successfully?

So I am setting up an older hard drive that I had left out but when I install it into my PC it does not format.

At first the hard drive is recognized and it appears in disk management as well. But when I try to format I get a message saying "The format did not complete successfully". After that the Hard drive isn't there and I have to reboot to be able to see the thing again.

Will the HDD be completely dead or is there a way to fix this? I'm really stuck with this one. So any help is appreciated

Edit - The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda 500gb 7200rpm

I would examine the SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

Look for reallocated, pending, or uncorrectable sectors.
