The gamers LCD?

Looking into probably a 19" LCD monitor, again, and a bit weary of the concept afterglow. Any good gammer's LCD out there?

You should check out the Dell 2001fp. It is a GREAT value, sometimes had for under 800 and it is a community favorite at the moment. If you want a 19'' the Dell 1900fp is also a good one.

I'm confused by your statement that "it is a community favorite at the moment" as the Tom's review states the following: "While it has specs that you can only dream of, the 2001FP is not a gamer's monitor. The afterglow is too visible. To get an idea, it's worse than monitors based on TN + Films, and these are often considered low-end products. Most MVA monitors, although 25 ms, also have a lower afterglow. At best, you can entertain the idea of a few slower games from time to time. Forget about FPS championship training on this."

It may be a fine monitor otherwise, but it's not a "gamers LCD."

A few people have reported no ghosting but I think it's safe to say that the ghosting is too much for gaming. Otherwise I would have bought one a while back.

I think Toms duffed that review...

I have a Dell 2001FP and am in love with it. I was shocked when THG brought out a review saying it showed pronounced ghosting and was unsuitable for gamers - I have been playing Battlefield Vietnam on a daily basis for months now and not once noticed ghosting.

I think Anandtech (blasphemy on this board Im sure) nailed it on the head when they started using the 2001FP as their reference LCD and posted comparisons between the analog signal performance and digital signal performance. Then the 2001FP got 3.5 out of 5 for ghosting using the analog signal and 5 out of 5 using DVI.

I think expecting a good 1600x1200 picture from an analog signal is a trifle optimistic, and I have of course only used DVI from my ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.

So, yes, I do think the Dell 2001FP is the best monitor on the market right now for the money, or for alot more money for that matter. Its great for gaming, great for general windows use, just plain great.

So THG - time to announce what connectors/signals you use when testing LCD monitors maybe?

I don't really agree. The Dell 2001FP is probably good (have not personally seen it) but it has been out for a while now. There are many new large LCD screens out in recent months that give better specs, look cooler, some come with speakers etc.

It's hard to find reviews of them though and it appears Toms has given up on LCD reviews so we're kinda stuck. If you search real hard around the web you cana review here and there though. Some monitors have been getting good reviews lately. I've been hearing a lot of news lately about LCD prices dropping this fall due to a surplus so I'm going to hold off till then for my purchase. Maybe save a couple hundred dollars as has been reported.
