Dude - you ARE emotionally disturbed. Sure, he's a rude jerk, but the energy you're putting into proving it goes beyond common sense and what I would call reasonable. He's rude, but you're insane - combine the two and you have a sad and sorry series of events like the one we see here. I hope you both get the therapy you deserve.

jedediah:

I don't see anything wrong about going the extra length and fight back at a merchant like this, merchants like Mr. Free needs to learn a lesson about business ethics because obviously he didn't learn enough about honesty from his parents, now he's working in this society, making childish mistakes is not tolerated any longer, he's not a kid anymore. If you are the victim here, and you choose to think that he's just a "rude jerk" and do nothing and walk away, he would be laughing all the way to the bank, just because you didn't care.

This Mr. Free is a very typical person that had his life too easy, probably have never got into much trouble before for whatever he did because maybe when he's younger, people surrounding him all thinks he's too cute and its okay. In terms he started to think that he's special in this world, he doesn't have to worry about those consequences that we normal people worries about when we consider taking any action, now he's getting older, welcome to the real world Mr. Free. Its time to learn about being realistic and honest, and consequences for failure.

Being Canadian, I can only do the classic Canadian thing and apologize that we too have scam artists in the great white north! I find it interesting that his postal outlet is in a completely different province than where his area code places him, that would suggest to me that he is tax evading his current province of residence.

Anyhow, I can only hope that the RCMP and other agencies "get their man" and put an end to this fraud.

Cheers,

Anyone else notice this from the "logistics" page:

"MacPadd processes its orders within 37 business days will often arrive at the homes and offices for our US and Canadian customers within 4 to 6 days of the processing of your order."

Ok, honestly, Tuan. It was obvious from your first story that this guy is a nut. By doing two extensive follow-ups providing point-by-point refutations of his obviously frivolous claims, it feels as if you are going beyond what is required by journalistic principle and embroiling yourself (as well as Tom's Hardware) in a thinly veiled flame war.

We don't need your medical records and a doctor's testimony to regard Mr. Free's claims about your psychological health as suspect. It is obvious you are dealing with a three year old, and you have exposed that for all to see. Is it really now necessary for you to act like a three year old yourself or can we call this case closed?

you should take pitty upon David Free, it does seem that he suffers from Compulsive Liar Syndrome. The product that David Free does sell looks nice and definetely worth to get; such a shame that such a product must go to waste because of a lousy business owner and his childish antics.

Are you kidding me? That mousepad is FAKE! The "engraving" on it appears differently in 3 different photos. It might not even be a hunk of aluminum. The photos of laser cutting and anodizing are stock photos. If these things were really being produced, don't you think he would have real photos? I wonder how many people have handed this guy $25 for nothing.

Well, reverse lookup on his "customer service" number provides an address right close to Buffalo, NY. Any media feel like taking a quick drive for an interview? I think it would be funny as hell!

I have been laughing ever since I found this on Gizmodo. I went to the University of Waterloo and actually got to know this guy's son pretty well. Mike was NOT going to UW, last I heard he'd flunked out of Conestoga College. Mike lied about everything. Stuff you wouldn't even lie about. We used to ask him about stuff just to hear his crazy stories. I have no idea if he knew that we knew they were all total fabrications. It seems like he learned this nifty trait from his father.

He told us a couple years ago that he was developing the Mac Padd as part of a course at Conestoga and was going to get some of his buddies at RIM to manufacture it we thought it was another lie. Looks like for once he was telling the truth.

This has made my day!

You wrote: "Free himself admits on his blog that there wasn't a tracking number for products shipped using Canada Post for travel to the USA. This claim in itself is wrong"

Actually, he is both right and wrong - it all depends on the level of shipping service used.

Canada-US shipping costs can be rather prohibitive, and far greater than country internal shipping. To this you must add custom brokerage and broker disbursement fees - even if duty and taxes are $5, disbursement fees may be a flat $25, so it climbs fast.

Low value, small packages may benefit from special shipping rates and avoid custom fees altogether - however they are often shipped using a barebone service that will not offer any form of tracking. I feel no tracking number for a commercial shipment is generally a very bad idea, but it is substantially cheaper. Tracking can be a paid option in such cases, but must be requested.

Proper policy would be to clearly indicate this to customer when selecting shipping method. But business shipping can be a complex task demanding both experience and attention to details, things somewhat lacking in this case.

As a general idea, consider brokerage fees when picking shipping: More expensive delivery services, such as AIR via Fedex or UPS, often include brokerage and disbursement fees, making what looks like a more expensive choice eventually cheaper when all the costs are tallied.

I must be yet another customer from hell because I can't seem to get what I paid for either....I placed an order with them on October 30th. To this day I still have NOTHING! I filed a dispute with Paypal that went unanswered. I then escalated it to a claim. Now they have provided a tracking number that shows nothing more than a electronically transmitted order to Canada Post on November 12th. There has been no progress of the package and no verification that a package was even dropped off or that the pkg was even being sent to me....I wish I would have seen your article before placing an order because I could have saved myself the aggravation....

Really? You were calling every 30 minutes about an order that hadn't arrived from another country within one week of being ordered? Um, do you have OCD, or are you merely a victim of TV culture?
