So, im playing battlefield 4 with a gtx 970 and a i5 4460. When theres no players on the same map, my gpu is working at 99% all the time. But on the same map at the exact same spot, but with 64 players on the server my gpu loads at like 50% (and i drop below 60 fps), though my cpu cores doesnt really reach 100%. Will a new overclocked cpu fix this or what is the problem?

Thanks.

Solution
BF4 multiplayer becomes very cpu dependent and can use many threads when there are many players.
You will not see many BF4 multiplayer benchmarks because it is so hard to set up and repeatedly run the same situation.
Your i5-4460 has a total passmark rating of 6621 and a single thread rating of 1948.
Because your cores do not reach 100%, it is an indication that there is some dependency on the performance of the single master thread.
Read "Amdahl's law" for insight on that.

You could replace your i5-4400 with a i7-4790K.
At stock, the passmark rating is 11206 and the single thread rating is 2529.
If your motherboard allows overclocking and you get a decent cooler, you can overclock and go...

Okay, thank you alot for the detailed explanation. Atm i dont have z97 motherboard, but the i7 4790k's boost clock is 4.5ghz, do i really need to go higher than that for a 970?

its just the game, when i had a single 970, on certain parts of the shanghai map on tdm, my usage would drop and so would my fps, on 64 players its expected.

i still gets drops now and my usage is nowhere near maxed

That is the nice thing about the i7-4790K; the stock speed is sufficiently high that you really get very little more out of overclocking it.
The boost clock will only apply to one core when the others are underutilized. That will not happen in your environment.

Task manager analysis is tricky.

You will see task manager activity across all cores.
That is windows spreading out the activity,
Likely one of the threads is running at 100%
A cpu bound single task running full out will show 25% utilization on each of the cores of a quad.

Nope, im monitoring the cores with riva tuner and no core is running at 100%.

Atm im not playing at that server but i can give you the server link.

Please tell me if you ever drop below 60 fps on any setting, because i basically get same fps on ultra and medium.

Exactly my point. The activity of a single 100% cpu bound thread will be dispatched by windows across all available cores so you will never see 100% on any single core.

Oh ok. But, would a i5 4690k be good enough or would you recommend a i7 4790k instead? Because my budget is either: i get a 4690k and get a z97 motherboard OR i get a 4790k and not overclock (at that time), what would you suggest?

you dont need to oc a 4790k mate :)

Alright, i guess thats the thing im buying when i get my sallary (and a gtx 1070 :)))))

Thank you all for the help. :)

good choice, good choice indeed, youre very welcome 😀

I would get the i7-4790K for YOUR needs, namely BF4 multiplayer.
In addition to a clock rate of 4.0, you will also get hyperthreads which will help with many players.
Most other games can use only 2-3 fast cores.
In those games an overclocked i5-4690K would be a bit better.

Yeah ill pick up a motherboard down the road to overclock, i mainly want to upgrade to be prepared for battlefield 1, and to play battlefield 4 and actually not worry about the stupid fps drops. Thanks alot for the help geofelt!
