This is the new system I'm putting together, and I need some input :
1.On the parts I've chosen, if you'd choose something else, please inform me why so I can make a decision as to whether or not I too would benefit from that choice
2.On the parts I'm unsure about, or haven't chosen yet.
Case : Thermaltake V8000. Only case with enough space, good airflow and ATX/BTX compatible (futureproof). Comes with two blue LED 12 cm fans, but will probably replace the two 9 cm fans with Blue led fans as well.
PSU : Thermaltake Silent purepower 680W. Mostly because its a strong PSU with all the necessary connections built in. Suggestions welcome for equally powerful PSU's (600+W) and enough connections for all I'm putting in that perhaps look a little better.
Mobo : MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (Socket 939), because its PCI-express, has ample SATA and IDE connections, and most importantly 4 PCI slots.
CPU : AMD athlon 64 X2 4800+, because I'm one of the people who benefited greatly from hyperthreading, and I don't really want to be without it now that i'm switching to AMD.
Memory : 2xTwinX2048 - 3200Pro DDR400 for 4GB. My alternative are Geil Golden dragon, also DDR400 for 4GB. Lack of enough memory has always been a bottleneck for my systems, even at 1GB.
Hard Disks : 2xWestern Digital Raptors 74GB in RAID0 as boot disk, 4x Western Digital Caviar 16MB cache, two of which are in Raid1. So 6 HD's for 4 logical drives. Boot disk, work disk, recording disk and backup disk. Just the way I've always done things.
Audio : Until the new X-Fi line comes out, I'll stick with my Audigy 2ZS platinum.
TV Tuner : I have a compo videomate gold Plus II I'm very pleased about, has TV/fm Tuner, S-video, analog and coaxial in. And decent software to boot.
Cooling : Coolermaster ALC-UO1 Aquagate for the CPU. Nice internal solution, fits nicely in the 5.25 inch bays. Only regret is that it has no option for a VGA cooler as well, so open to suggestions.
Video-card : Haven't chosen yet. Need a high end graphic solution with ample memory, so preferably 512, because for my work I do 3D graphic molecular clarification (I'm a biochemist). On top of that I like the occasional game and I don't like to worry about compatibility of new games. Which would be better ? Geforce 6800 (or wait for 7800?) or an ATI X850, or should I opt for an SLI solution like the gigabyte or asus dual Ge6800 cards ?
Aerocool, cool panel silver. 8-in-1 memory card reader, two external sata connections? firewire, USB and system data. Seems lik a nice all in one solution. I need a card reader, and I love the external SATA for additional hard drives.
Not sure about optical drives, either benq or NEC, DVD-/+R/RW DL, and will probably wait for second drive since I heard Blu-Ray drives are coming as early as january 2006.
Anybody has an idea about a cool Floppy drive, I would be much endebted as well.
As far as peripherals : Logitech Z-5500 speakers, Logitech Di Novo desktop set, webcam, printer/scanner, 2 flat panel screens, 1 23 inch and 1 15 inch, and a decent quality beamer.
All input highly welcomed. Especially if you think of additional useful things to put in there.
