I was in the same situation as you I ended up going for the 970 it's a bit quicker has shadow play but in saying that the 390 is a great card look at it like this if your on 1080p the 970 will be a better card however on any higher resolution id go for the 390

Also look at the 970 as a 3.5gb card the last 500mb of it is very slow and will make games stutter

depends on what kind of support you need from a card ??

amd last I looked only supports 64bit 7 and 8.1 has no native analog support [dvi-d] just to start you would have to buy a adaptor extra cost and then hope it will work ...

970 - supports all but xp and has dvi-I for guys that still may require analog support right out of the box ?

amd cards are super limited on what they can really do .. all folks see is fps and nothing else

the 960 has it all covered the best

It really depends on what plans you have.

The GTX970 is a great card for the money nVidia is asking for it, even with that "detail" that has the last 512MB of it's 4GB is slower. There is hardly a game that pushes above 3GB unless you go multi monitors or 4K.

Now, if you don't care about power consumption, think of going into multi monitor set ups AND plan on going with more than one card eventually, then the 390X is not a bad idea either. The 390X'es 8GB will come in hand at greater/bigger resolutions, but in terms of performance at 1080p, the 970 is the better all-around card in my opinion. Even better than the 980 at 1080p from a price/performance point of view.

Cheers!
