I always thought that you were ment to put just enough heat compound on the CPU to cover it untill I saw Tom's latest article. From the photo it looks like he's put on quite a lot.

Use just enough to provide even coverage across the CPU core, a thin film is best, because the compound, although a decent conductor, is still not as good a conductor as the heatsink that is sitting on it.
