Thermal paste help?

Hi there, I've recently brought a second hand Q6600 off ebay, and some Artic silver 5 thermal paste to upgrade an old dual core 1.86ghz processor. I've checked It's compatible and everything, but other than watching youtube videos, i have no idea what I'm doing.. So how do i apply the thermal paste? Do I put some on and spread it with a card, or just do a thin line?

Also, is there anything I should watch/read, or any tips anyone has for me? This is my first time changing a component other than RAM.. so I'm admittedly a bit of a noob.

I looked on google/youtube for quite a while before asking here, so theres no need to be an arse about it just because I'm new.

I'm asking advice because there are different ways of doing it, and google didn't tell me a definate answer on what to do, with different places advising different things. I'm wanting to apply it in the most effective way, without causing any damage to my PC, and I'm also wondering if anybody has any tips on mistakes I can make.

1) Arctic silver web site has a tutorial on how to best apply their product todifferent cpu's.

2) It is not rocket science, every method will work acceptably.

3) You can remove the old material using alcohol. The purer the better. I use a paper coffee filter to do it because it will leave no threads like cloth might.

4) Thermal material is an insulator, it's job is to fill microscopic holes in the matching surfaces and force out air which is a very bad insulator. Use only enough to do the job. It is very hard to use too little.

5) Consider removing the motherboard from the case, when you do the job. Assuming you are using a stock cooler, you need to be able to look at the back of the motherboard to be certain that all 4 push pins are completely through and locked.

6) Play with the pins so you understand how they work. The trick to installing the cooler is to push down on diagonal pins simultaneously.

7) Check that the cooler will not wiggle after installation. If it does, it means that one or more pins are not secure, and you will get bad cooling.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of checking their page, admittedly. Just so I know, what do i have to be careful of when cleaning the CPU? Do I just rub a thin layer of alcohol in gently and leave it to dry?

Not exactly, it will be a sticky goo.

To make the cooler easier to get off, run the cpu hot for a bit before shutting down. That will soften the compound making it easier to remove the old cooler.

Put some alcohol on the paper filter and wipe the residual. The alcohol will soften the residual goo, so you can wipe up some. Then do it again, with a clean piece of filter,until it is perfectly clean.
