Thermal Paste Method for Cooler Base Shape

I read an article where it says that you should use the pea method for a circle base cooler so that the thermal paste spreads into the shape of the base.

And use X method (or spread, although I know it's not good) for square coolers.

Is this true or does it not matter?

It really does not matter. You just want to ensure a good contact between CPU surface and cooler without applying too much. I have done it all, spread, rice, pea, X. It all does the same thing. just getting a good thin contact layer of thermal paste.

you might want to look here,its the arctic silver site,select the thermal paste you wish to use and then your processor and it will show you the best method of application.

Best would be covering the entire heat spreader. Any method is fine as long as it's a thin layer, if it's too much you'll notice because it'll start pouring out from the sides, this is a problem if the thermal paste used is conductive. Otherwise it's not and people make applying thermal paste seem like rocket science.
