EA,

I'm running a couple of old Dell Optiflex GX110s. :) They are PIII 733 on i810 boards. They put out 35 to 36 PPD running GROMACS. Not bad at all since the old SIS boards running pIII 800s only do 12 to 16 PPD :x Hardly worth the effort. Those early PIII SIS chip sets are really bad. 🙁

I'm getting about the same performance from old PIII VIA chipset boards as I am from the i810s, not quite but almost, so they're OK too. :) The, slightly newer, i820 boards perform about the same as the i80s for folding. 8O I thought they would do better, with the RAMBUS memory and all, but they don't. Oh well...

Every point counts even if it is only 12 to 16 per day. Just set those machines to get WU's w/out deadlines.

From what I've heard, currently there are no deadlineless WU's available. Not sure how true this is, but I did try to set the configuration for a laptop and was unable to get any for quite some time, when I set it to No preference I received a WU.

I do hope that's only temporary, if not, it will be such a pity.

You are right about that but I, currently, have a space constraint. I only have room for about 8 machines. 🙁 When if turns cold, and I have some time, I'll get down into the basement and do some re-wireing and put machines down there. 😀 That will give me room for about 30, maybe more. 8) For now, it is just the 8 best performers I can get. The old SIS P3 800s don't qualify.

I was just offered 5 P2 500s today, I'll be picking them up tomorrow. :) They will go into the basement awaiting the re-wireing along with the old SIS P3 800s, some HP P3 650s, and a few others that are already there.

Bill

I don't think there are any deadlineless WUs any more :?: I haven't seen any. Besides, even 12 PPD machines can do a 300 pointer in 25 days 😱 I know because I had them doing it.

I did some calculations, a while back, on AMBER core requirements and it came out to about 3.5 PPD to meet the required deadline. That can be done with about anything made in the last 10 years. 😀 The old guys are still useful. You just have to have the room for them.

I hope you will be getting down to your basement to do your rewiring soon.
Would love to build another dedicated rig for folding, but I am out of spare cash for now. 🙁

Our team has 2 threats now, Team Ukraine and Team ATI Technologies.

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=40051

Team ATI Technologies seem to be on a surging run. First time I noticed it would take 9.9 years for them to overtake us. Now its 6.6 years. They also have a higher % of active users.

Anyone has any ideas on how we can counter these threats?

Yah, I was looking at that just a couple of days ago wondering what to do. I was looking at it from the other direction though, I was wondering how we could overtake DevFolding in 2 weeks rather than 4. :) The net effect is the same. :)

With the new folding client for the video cards I expect a lot of people are giving it a try, and doing it for the manufacturers team. 🙁

I actually collected a lot of equipment by sending out an e-mail to everyone I know asking for old equipment and then asking them to forward the e-mail to everyone they know. It worked pritty good. You aren't going to get any dual core machines that way but you get a lot of old P3, celeron, XP, and sempron stuff. It all folds. 😀

With Christmas coming up, a lot of people will be wondering what to do with their old computers when Santa brings them a new one. Contact them now to see if you can have it to dedicate to medical research. That is, just in case that's what Santa is bringing.

I'll be adding 4 servers from work to the THG team in the next few weeks. Each server is a IBM x346 with 2 processors, each being a dual core 3.2Ghz Xeon 8) So I'll be able to run 16 clients at the same time and add 25+Ghz to the team

We max the ram out at work, but the processors rarely go over 15% load. Just waiting for the external consultant to give the nod and its on!

To beat Team ATi technologies, lets all just rush out there, buy 2 x 8800GTX's and use them for folding in SLi... and a Kentsfield just for the added grunt  6 x F@H clients per computer would be interesting!

*** This is becoming addictive 8O ***

Wow, I can't believe all the activity since the last time I posted here. Good work to everyone who's been adding hardware. I've been adding a few clients here and there as I can, and hopefully should start to see some results fairly soon. Also, just replaced the CPU in my sig rig with an Opty 175, so I'm hoping for some decent OC ability there, but that'll take time. For now I'm just running with an easy 20% OC. (2.42GHz/core @ 1.35v, 440MHz DDR 2.5-3-2-7 @ 2.8v). I'll keep you guys posted on the Opty OC results.

Hello all I saw this the other day so I started two Machines at work on the folding project. I'am working on WU's 4&5 right now.
I'am using the name Flyingp51.

Welcome Enzo (Flyingp51) 8)

We are happy for all the help we can get. :)

Look on the previous page for a bunch of links posted to help out new folders. :)

Bill

Welcome Enzo. Please feel free to post questions if you have any doubts. I have received a lot of guidance from some of the long time folders here. I am sure if you have any queries we will be able to help you solve it, as long as there is a solution for it. :)

Does anyone here have any idea how to determine whether we have received a large WU? By the number of points given, as indicated by http://fah-web.stanford.edu/psummary.html , or is there a website where a detailed explanation is given?

I have been trying to find out what is Stanford's definition on Large WUs and what are the "recommended" requirements to crunch a large WU. I used "" because I know any CPU bought within these two or three years should be more than sufficient to fold normal WUs, but I suspect Large WUs have some other requirements.

Not sure if I am too hard on myself, but if I take more than 72 hours on my dedicated folding rig 24/7 to crunch a WU, is that considered slow? The WU in question is p2124, Gromaca Core.

Hay buddy,

I've been going by points and the p2124 is a large one in my book. :) I haven't seen a "hard" definition of large and small, AMBERs are small, the 21xxs are large. I guess some in the middle are kind of grey.

Here is a link to Stanfords "Currently Running Projects" list. Search down the page for whatever WU you are interested in. 8)
http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html

As for me, I've got 2124 running on a P3 800, it started Oct 23rd, it is schedualed to end on Nov 19th. Well within the 110 days allowed for it. It's worth 396 points. I'de call it a big one.

Remember, the original idea for all this is that the work is done in a screensaver while the user isn't using their PC. Us dedicated folders are kind of an exception.

Bill

i consider most WU that take more then 48 hours as large... the points aren't always worth it though, and they may not exactly be resource intensive, one thing i wish i could get my hands on is more PC's...

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean. Personally, I am not trying to nitpick, however, just want to find out whether it is possible to optimise my dedicated folding rig, or it is because of some other background tasks that are running that is competing with F@H for system resources?

One of my desktop is not dedicated, I use it for work and other stuff, on some rare occasions I use it to game for a short while. I also managed to get a friend to run F@H on his laptop (with his permission of course).

The only issue is that he only runs his laptop 4 to 6 hours a day. For the laptop I do not set it to receive large WUs, because I cannot be sure that the preferred deadline can be met, although I am pretty sure that the final deadline can be met. I do contact him once in a while, every 10 days or so, to monitor whether the preferred deadline can be met.

I fold for the science, though I do want the team to move up the ranks as well. Folding is voluntary, so I can't expect my friend to fold 24/7, its good enough he's willing to fold for now.

For the dedicated rig, besides the most basic drivers and some necessary software (anti-virus and firewall), no games or software is installed on it, so as to make sure the system runs at its optimum.

As long as science and the team both benefit with my continual participation, I will continue to do so as long as I am needed. :)

morpheous,

I have no official capacity here, but I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we are very happy to have your contribution. 😀 And keep up the good work 8)

Bill

Adding my xp 3100 to the mix, hopefully better power when i add a new rig, been a lurker on TG's for ages but F@H finally made me set up an account 😀

Carod

and first ever post so hoping this works :?

Welcome to the team. :) Every contribution counts. As bholland2 mentioned before, its a worthy project and no contribution is too small. Thats a pretty good rig you have. Happy folding.
