We're literally mobile colonies of bacteria and viruses, and PCs aren't unless we bring the colony to them... and even then, many couldn't survive in a PC anyways.

That product is 95% gimmick.

Now used on a large scale, ionization of air using UV and charge plates is actually quite effective because by the time it gets back to an affected surface, the oxidizes air particles are neutralized. They use them on large scale air handlers.

It's not bulk ionizing air. The Ti02 is acting as a photocatalyst. Google the Honda-Fujishima effect for details.

One burp and a days worth of spinning is overwhelmed.

This is a solution in search of a problem.
However....the "problem" is - "How can we sell useless/misleading crap to people that have zero clue?"

It's not as ineffective as you believe. The fan is rated 34cfm, which in your average 150 sq. ft. room means that at full speed it will exhaust the entire room every 35 minutes or so. Put two of them in a case, and you'll purify your room four times an hour.

Or...
Buy a few, and mount them in the entrances to the home.

Either way, they really aren't that useful in a PC.

I'm sure that's calculated under ideal circumstances, but still far from wholly ineffective. It's certainly more effective than wearing a bit of cloth over your face and calling it a mask.

In any case, if such a little fan were able to sanitize the full airspace in a typical residential room, multiple times per hour...we'd be seeing that solution all over. Not just in a PC fan.

Playing on people's fears with a product like this is really in poor taste. The marketing hype is strong while the science and math behind the claims of goodness are beyond weak.

Err, we are. This is just a low-rent variant of the PECO/PCO type air sanitizers; there's at least a thousand different such products on sale already, from small single-room units no more expensive than two or three of these fans, up to hospital-grade units capable of serving an entire facility.

Will one small fan sanitize an entire room? No, of course not -- for that, you need an efficacy of 99.9% or so. Still, one of these in a small to medium sized room would provide a measurable decrease in both vocs and airborne microorganisms. As said earlier-- it's certainly more effective than a cloth mask, and look how heavily those are being promoted.

Bacteria, viruses, and fungi. They're not going to be killed in appreciable quantities by a brief whisk through a normal PC. In fact, in a humid environment, I've seen fungus actually growing inside a case.

Could possibly make good use as an exhaust fan for the computer.
I use more efficient dust filters and powerful fans for the intake.
