This version of the OS was long before I was born... but I hope I'm speaking for at least a small subsection of society when I say that being involved in (home/casual) computers was a lot more entertaining and fun back in the old days.

... then again, I was a Windows 95 scrub. I actually installed Bonzi Buddy. Maybe that's why it was more fun back then.

I just kinda feel like computing anymore has gotten too developed to feel like I'm taking part in something new and exciting; before, it was a new and unexplored frontier...

... or maybe I'm just a nostalgic dolt. :)

When Win1.0 came out I was happy running DOS. We started using Windows at version 3.1, mainly because we had a few programs that required it. Our in-house programs still ran under DOS.

At home I didn't have any interest in GUI, but I did have interest in multitasking. I was interested in bulletin boards and download messages and/or files took a lot of time. It was handy to be able to start a download in one window and then go to another window to do something else. Even Win3.1 didn't do this the way I wanted because it wouldn't scale text, so I used Desqview Xwindows. It did multitasking very well for me.

When Win95 came out I installed it and was happy with it. From there I've had Win98SE, WinXP and now Win7. (So I skipped WinME, Win2000, and to some extent Vista although I have Vista on one of my laptops.)

[citation][nom]jaghpanther[/nom]Makes me want to break out 3.11. Now if I could only find a 8" floppy drive at my local re-sale shop...[/citation]

I still have 20 of them somewhere down in my basement :)

[citation][nom]sinsear[/nom]Probably more like 160x120... the pixels are as big as your thumb.[/citation]

As of today, I still using that type of terminal to managing 1000+ Linux systems. Only if you know how to use it and know how useful that is..

Fall of '85? Oh yeah, I remember then. Full color display, stereo sound, a pre-emptive multitasking OS, and fully functional PnP, and $1200 cheaper than the Mac 128k. Too bad it all came from the tech company with the worst executive management in history.

Still, it's no surprise that a Windows 1.0 press release is now an obscure relic no one really remembers while the Mac and Amiga are remembered as revolutionary.

I was two years out of college. I used to use DesQview; outstanding program for multitasking DOS apps. I remember some tech writer at PC Mag (or maybe PC Week) saying that for stability, it was better to run multiple instances of Windows in DesQview with one application each, than to try and run multiple Windows apps.
I could not understand how, for business use, Windows up to 3.0 was remotely acceptable, as often as it crashed. WFW3.11 was a little better, but not until 98 did I begin to "like" it. Apparently, I'm also one of the few that never had a problem with WinME. I skipped Shista due to known compatibility issues with software / games I use (e.g. Sacred), but Win7 runs them all no problem.

1985, I believe we were getting ready for the state championship in football. I was playing LodeRunner in the school's computer lab. My my my does that bring back memories. Thanks Bill.

1985-1992: I was busy playing with my Amiga500 while Bill Gates was trying hard to transform the PC into one. 1992: PC386-486 came knocking at retailers doors, with Win 3.0, and I am sorry mom, for having put $3K on your credit card for that heap of PC ****. Amiga FTW
PC's today though, well, they finally caught up.

watched all 3 last night! lol ...that year rocked!

Wonder what ever happened with that MS operating system that was due to come out between Windows ME and Windows XP....

MS was hard at work trying to integrate their 3 greatest OS's... Windows ME, Windows NT, and Windows CE....

I hear it was to be called Windows CEMENT - Garunteed to slow your system to a halt. =)

[citation][nom]peterkidd[/nom]"...lets users integrate the tasks they perform with their computer by providing the ability to work with several programs at the same time and easily switch between them without having to quit and restart individual applications."Fast forward to current day for iphone, sans iOS 4. Good job Apple you just did it! Haha.[/citation]

Actually, it's a well known fact that Bill Gates stole the idea of a multi-tasking OS from Apple/Mac. Fast forward to today, and Micro$oft is still stealing ideas from Apple.

In 1985 I was still using typwriters and liquid white out. The only computer I used was a commodore 64 and that was only for games. My first PC was a well worn 8088 in 1989. No windows on it. Just DOS. My first experience with windows was windows 3.1 on a packard bell 486DX. I knew there were versions of windows before 3.1 but I never knew anyone that used them. Windows was considered silly by most people before 3.1 came out. Then all of a sudden everyone HAD to have it.

I was 4yo and running around playing with my GI Joes and Toy guns. I don't think these kids know what cap guns or kites are, kinda like i didn't know what a computer was.

My first PC was 8088 XT with CGA graphics (hooray!) and MS-DOS that I was updating regularly via FIDO Net (I was a FIDO Net sys admin that time - a lot of fun and daily responsibilities too). As soon as I got 386DX PC, I immediately installed Win 3.11. Of cause I was always jealous of guys working downstairs on Sun stations with HUGE 21 inch color CRT displays!!!!!!!! and full-time twisted-pair internet access - so no V32bis modems... Of cause, there was a moment of waiting for Win 95... that was crushing every 20 min if you run some more-or-less useful calculations. So, I had to install IBM OS/2 - WARP 3.0 instead of buggy Win 95. OS/2's stability was totally mind-blowing: it did not crush for 4 days of intensive number crunching and was also compatible with Win 3.11. Too bad, IBM had abandoned this beautiful platform and now we all have to suffer...
