This is why Fry's sucks

Frys has always been good to me to. They may not the most refined salespeople in the world, but they have a good selection, excellent sale prices (except on videocards, which no brick+mortar store does), and a godsend of a return policy.

This happened to me at Newegg. I bought a 22in (216bw) Samsung monitor from there back in November. A day later, the order was canceled due to lack of stock. I called and asked about the sale price ($50 off); if I'd get the sale price when it came back in stock and they said no. I wasn't overly upset as this happens from time to time. You may have submitted your order just as the last one went out the door and they hadn't scanned it in or something yet. I didn't care much cause I got the 220WM on black friday a lot cheaper. Don't get me wrong, Newegg is still among the best and order from them constantly but things like this do happen every now and then (if they didn't refund your money, like at hotbuyselectronics.com, thats a different story)...

You know, I worked at frys for 3 years as a service tech before i moved on to VMware, and i gotta say frys does suck. (sorta) They are some of the best priced items you can find around, have a huge selection, and for the most part they generally always have what i want. Even their return dept is not too bad. (but sometimes it is)

However where they suck is customer service. I've been a die-hard computer gamer/ensuthist all my life, and i totally understand the amount of people they hire is minimal to keep costs down. (makes perfect sense)

But the people they employ should be very knowable in their job and dept. Where i live in silicon valley cali, theirs 6 frys and i have been to each one and lived here all my life (31 years). And i gotta say, from my standpoint, i have only met maybe 5 people in all that time that not only knew their job, but were smart enough, and computer savy enough to make suggestions on things even i was unsure of. 99% of the employees in most frys are not gamers, not ensuthists, and don't care about computers. Its just a job. When i go to frys, i make sure i know what i want before i go. But thank god for me in my area theres a store called centralcomputers. (www.centralcomputer.com)(just fyi)

Despite the crappy website they have, i can go into any of their stores and ask anything i want. 100% of the employees are die hard gamers, even the techs come out of the back room to assit you in building or making decisions about your new rig. Where frys has a huge selection on my items, central only has gamer type brands, the only mobo brands they carry are intel, asus, evga. just as an example. I don't know what i would do without them. They test parts for you for free, they build your rig (water blocks or liquid nitro even) all free. But to pay for all that killer service, they again, only carry high end items (they don't know the meaning of off-brand) and the price is sometimes the same as frys or 5% higher.

So for all of the people out there that hate frys. Know this.

Frys is just another buiness trying to make money and cut costs, they hire people with no experiance because they are cheap to hire and they don't always have something in stock.

on the positive side, they have huges selections, a fairly decent return dept, rock bottom prices (in most cases)

I mean we all know (you get what you pay for) If i want a cheap 200 dollar internet rig, I goto frys. If i want a real rig, i either shop online, or goto central.

so, to the original poster i say this. Learn more about what you want before shopping at frys, call ahead and make sure they have at least 3+ in stock of the item you want,(when i worked there 3 or less meant they didnt have it.)
and also, understand unless your very lucky, you not going to find a really knowledgable person at frys.(for the most part)

I'm lucky to live in silicon valley, i have many options. But nomatter what state you live in, theres always gotta be another computer store besides frys you can buy things at. Just like walmart is not the only low cost retail store out there.

On a side note, Personally i would love it if frys only hired gamers/ensuthists, or maybe even people with degrees in the computer field, but we all know thats not only not going to happen, but would cost too much to employ them so their costs would no long be cheap. Thus negating the reason i shop there.

LMAO! the Arlington store isn't so bad. plus they got some nice lookin chicks that work there too.

ok first, this is Toms Hardware, not Fry's Electronics... stop your crying here if you hope to accomplish something at fry's...

secondly, you're in a for a rude surprise if you think that A.) Fry's cares about the QQ'ing of one consumer... B.) It's Fry's fault that you didn't pick up the deal fast enough... C.) your little rant HERE, at TOMS HARDWARE, is going to resolve your issue with FRYS ELECTRONICS...

seriously, go cry to their corporate relations and keep your rubbish out of our forums... we get enough complaints from people that wonder why their new 8800GTX isn't working with their stock dell and it's whopping 300W power supply...

I used to work for frys, and i will tell you some of the people they employ are not very bright at all, let alone knowledgeable in the field of computers. i used to work up at the front doing returns, and also on the sales floor in the components dpt yet the A+ staff always called me up to help come fix problems whenever they had a Mac come in or, when ever they had something they should have been able to answer. but other than their pathetic staff, as far as finding things, i personally think they are better than most of their competitors, such as BestBuy.

EDIT: their website is the worst ive ever had to navigate through.

A+ certification. Teaches you how to explain to non-tech people that you really do not know what you are doing.

Yeah, I just saw that yesterday. Fortunately, I already got my case - Ultra m998. Beautiful.

I've had good and bad experiences with Fry's. About 2 )maybe 3) years ago, I was building my first computer. I bought 2x512mb sticks of DDR2 533Mhz RAM, which back then was about $100. When I got everything hooked up, it was actually 2 sticks of 1Gb. Which was really nice for me, because 2Gbs in a computer wasn't as common back then. It was just really cool.

And then I've had some bad experiences with returning products. I'd say the customer service isn't that good. But I guess they have good deals sometimes.

I like newegg. When I went to go buy my Tuniq Tower, the price was $60, when it is almost consistently on sale for $40 on newegg. But I needed it anyway, and bought it. Before it even got to my house, the price went back down to $40. I emailed newegg and explained what happened, and they gave me a $20 refund.

Newegg has great service.

I've been buying from Newegg for a good deal of time. I've never come across anyone that had a bad thing to say about their customer service. Newegg is the service king.

Alright, I want to get this, but the rebate must be postmarked by the 15th. Do you think if I ordered tonight, Newegg will get it to me before the 15th so I can send in the rebate?

Actually, I probably need to get it by the 14th for it to be postmarked by the 15th. Dang.. that's cutting it close, don't want to get screwed because of shipping times.

Edit:
Okay, I just found a promo code for this that takes an additional $30 off!
http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemai...=EMC-IGNECASE020808-_-email-_-E0D-_-Moredeals

So that's:

$169 - $30 instant - $30 promo code - $50 rebate + $0 shipping = $59.99 total

Fry's typically has terrible prices compared to say newegg.... but they do have the occasional super deal on a random item you might want. It would probably be a bad deal to order your whole system from them.

I am not a big fan of Buy.com, most of the deals they have require a rebate, and in my opinion rebates are a scam.
Frys.com has good deals on various things, but not the best prices overall. I guess I have been very lucky that I have not had to deal with customer service at Frys.com.
Zipzoomfly also has good prices on most things.
But Newegg has the best customer support and shipping service, that I get most of the things I buy from them. I also like Newegg's web site design the best, it's easier to find things on their site.

well, it seems as though fry's is trying to improve. there was a similar scenario where a power supply was on sale with an excellent rebate. i jumped on it, got the confirmation email, and then a similar rejection email a day later, telling me they were out of stock. HOWEVER, they now included a statement saying they would try to fulfill my order within the next 30 days. does this still include the rebate? i'm not entirely sure, but at least they were apologetic about the confusion, and stated they were working to resolve the problem. This is all i wanted, a company to try to please the customer. without customer service, you're sunk as a business. it looks like someone there knows what they're doing. i hope they continue to work hard for the poor guy like me too keep prices low and service good.

I have the same experience with an ordering of Norton 360 yesterday. It is EXACTLY the same experience. I wrote to Fry's headquarter at San Jose and complain about that. The rebate is only good for the day and I missed it because of Fry's problem. I spent hour entering the order, gathering rebate required document, fill in document etc. The next day, I was told it is out of stock.
