According to a graph I saw on Micron's website (I think they own and make Corsair memory modules), there will be an 80% premium on DDR3, which will drop down to 20% in a year's time. Doing the math the first set will be ~$295.80, and the second set will be ~$248.40. A year after that, the prices should be ~$246.50, and ~$207.00, respectively.

On the matter of latencies, I can't speak on that.

This isn't true actually. Last Anandtech tests showed that DDR3 @ 7-7-7 can actually surpass DDR2 @ 4-4-4. Give it another 6-12 months for latency to go at or below 6-6-6 (5-5-5?) and we'll have a killer. That's of course when price will be at a reasonnable height .

I wouldn't build a system on DDR3 right now, price is just too high. But this time next years, going DDR2 is gonna be st**id for any performance PC.

Add that NEHALEM might have (probably will) dual-DDR3-1600 support (for 25,6GB/s), and there won't even be a contest there. XBit-labs even mention that it might have triple-DDR3-1600 for the "on-die VPU" version. That's all it needs to take off! :twisted:

I don't think you understand what I'm saying.

It doesn't matter if you have 25GB/s bandwidth, or 250GB/s bandwidth.
As long as your FSB isn't at the exact same speed, you're always going to get the same performance - except that because of the high latency of DDR3, u will get worse performance than DDR2.

Thus, DDR3 will only be useful when the FSB is 2133 at stock.

Yes but in the meantime, do we also get DDR3 800, and DDR3 1000 to go with that 1333 and supposed 1667. Heck I might even see DDR2 1000 as acceptable for the current AM2's by then, too.

As long as your FSB isn't at the exact same speed, you're always going to get the same performance - except that because of the high latency of DDR3, u will get worse performance than DDR2.

Thus, DDR3 will only be useful when the FSB is 2133 at stock.

This isn't true neither, at least for 1333 mhz fsb coming. You can then get the full bandwidth of your fsb with only one stick which is a big advantage. It's true though that dual-channel become useless unless there is a VPU on board.

Also, the latency of DDR3 is no worst then DDR2 in reality. First because higher frequency make real latency much lower then slower latency for same number. Also, DDR3 has a lot of technique (that I honestly can't explain) to hide latency. The tests shows that DDR3 1.6ghz at 7-8-7-14 has better latency then DDR2 800mhz at 3-3-3-8, at about 2-5% better. But when you look at the number, it should be worst (double everything and you get 6-6-6-16 for DDR2 at 1.6ghz).

Why would u want to have the full bandwidth with just one stick? Thats just silly.
