I am still trying to get a friend to dump his 16MB 3DFX Voodoo3 2000... but it is an AGP card and it still plays some of his games quite well... Diablo2... well, maybe just Diablo2... I will be getting my hands on an old PCI GF2 MX 400 64MB card, and I plan to just give it to him... I am assuming that even though this is an outdated PCI card, it will kick that old 3DFX card around in 3D games...

any thought on this...

It will be better than Voodoo everywhere, except glide-only games.

He is an Everquest nut... not sure if that is a gluide only game... I do not think so... but he still manages to find drivers that work for the Voodoo... Neverwinter Nights and other newer games do not even support 3DFX...

PCI graphic card needs a lot bandwidth on PCI bus. You will have problem if you have other PCI card that need a lot of bandwidth.

Ya, he has other pci devices... modem, lan, possibly sound... unless some are ISA...

I am going to put a AGP GF2 64MB card in one of my computers where I am not using any pci slots... perhaps the thing to do is just give him my agp card and let me struggle with the pci card on my 3rd machine...

but wait... on-board devices use the pci bandwoidth, too, don't they? Even if all my slots are, free... will those other devices us it up?

All he'll do to piss you off is play Need for Speed just to show you how crappy his "new" card is.

If money was tight I think I'd spring for an 8500LE or even a Ti4200 if you could find one cheap...

Wasn't Voodoo3 limited to 16-bit color with 3D acceleration?

PCI 3D cards suck but I'd think that even the PCI version of the MX400 would be much faster than Voodoo3.

Of course, if he's a real friend you'll give him the AGP version.

Ya, I should give him the GF2 agp card, for it is my 3rd best card (but I have plans for it if I can get a 3rd computer up and running with a Palomino 1900+), and he is not the type of person to make the offer seem appreciated... and he is currently too proud or too cheap to put a newer computer together for himself... I once ran this Chaintech pci card playing Dungeon Siege once to test it, and it sucked compared to the Powercolor agp GF2... but the idea about other pci devices taking up pci bandwidth has me thinking... do onboard devices count... the pci card does have better ram...
