Hello,

I am new to this forum, but I follow Tom's Hardware from my region. Anyway, I'd like to know your opinion about this configuration I made up by doing a bit of research. I come from a GTX 1080 and an Intel I-7 7700k, and I think it has now come the time to change my build.

I mostly use it for gaming in 1440p 140Hz, and I would like to play games like Cyberpunk 2077, A Plague Tale Requiem, TLOU, and other similar, and enjoy them with very good graphic settings.

Here is the configuration I made. What do you all think?

MB: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3d
Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE
RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30
PSU: Corsair RM850x (2021) 850 W 80+ Gold
Case: NZXT H7 Flow ATX
SSD: Crucial P3 Plus 2TB M.2 PCIe Gen4 2TB
Monitor (actual): Asus MG279Q 27.0" 2560 x 1440 144 Hz

About the GPU I have some doubts: I would pick up the RTX 4070, but I don’t know if it’s “enough” for the build above. I would like to get the RTX 4080, but it’s a bit overpriced and costs more the the previous components, hence, I thought about getting the RTX 4070 so that, eventually, whether I want to change it in 2/3 years, I will change only the GPU and not the whole PC, hoping in a few years the futures GPU will have more reasonable prices. There also is the RTX 4070 Ti, but I read it doesn’t have a great price/performance ratio.

Without the GPU I’m almost on 1150€.

As RAM I know there also is the Corsair Vengeance, but in this forum someone suggested the G.Skill because it better fit with the Ryzen 7800x3d and as Cooler the Noctua NH-D15, but it costs 2x rather than the Thermalright.

Thank you

I have concerns about the cooler with that particular CPU.
I also wonder why you would consider such a budget storage option for a build that is mostly otherwise capable of more throughput.

what cooler and storage do you suggest? Other than the Noctua I also read the Be Quiet Rock Pro 4 is a good choice

Here's another option. The 120mm fan goes inside the back of that case for a rear exhaust fan.

Well, TBH, that Peerless model is considered a really good budget choice. I know there are loads of reviews out there for it, so it may be worthwhile to check and see if someone has done this type of build with it and see what the results are. Of course, other factors will matter as well, such as supplemental fans for the case. With a higher end 40xx (or whatever you land on) inside that case it is going to have high potential for getting quite warm. And, being fair, where the big Noctua and Be quiet coolers are well regarded, I would check for reviews of those with this setup, if there is anything around. My own opinion on this build (aside from concerns about ambient temps in your location) would be to consider an AIO.

As far as storage, I use those P3 Plus all day long for budget upgrades/option. For your main OS drive on a system of this caliber it would be worthwhile to consider something faster. Not trying to fanboi on a particular manufacturer but Samsung is almost always a good choice for consideration. There are other good drives out there with better I/O than the Crucial.

Not for nothing, I certainly admire the work and effort you put into build lists, but this build is in the neighborhood of 500 pound more than the original build. This starts being something more "next level" than an impartial build review.

EDIT- OOP, you know what, I am going to leave my comment there for transparency, but I also did not note that you included the graphics card into that raise. My apologies for the criticism.

Thank both for the advices.

for 370€ I can pick the Ryzen 7 7800x3d. I know it's a bit overkilled for an AMD 7800XT or an RTX 4070 (I prefer the latter because of better RT performance and because of DLSS instead of FSR), but I watched some videos and benchmarks where with that pairing, games had higher FPS. That said, I also prefer going with the 7800x3d in order that I'm fine for the next few years, and whether I want to change my GPU, I can easily change it without updating my whole build. Instead of an RTX 4070, I can also think of going for an RTX 4070 Ti.
Don't want to be rude to your build, I really appreciated the effort, but I'm not convinced about the Ryzen 7700. Instead, I would consider the i5 13600k that I read it's a great CPU too.

such as supplemental fans for the case.

Yes, I will definitely add two more fans to the front panel.

And, being fair, where the big Noctua and Be quiet coolers are well regarded, I would check for reviews of those with this setup, if there is anything around. My own opinion on this build (aside from concerns about ambient temps in your location) would be to consider an AIO.
Yes, I agree, I have to check whether other people have this setup, but I don't know where to find them 😕. In case, I can consider a Be quiet cooler or, as you said, an AIO.

Apart from some updates (i.e. cooler and storage) do you both think that that build is overall a good one or totally "trash" and "nonsense" for playing at 1440p with a mid-rage GPU?

Thanks again
