Question Thunderbolt 3 monitor compatibility with 'regular' USB-C laptop

Hello,

I am in the market for a ultrawide monitor for my home office. I want to be able to connect my laptop to the monitor with an usb-c cable, transfer video/audio/charging my laptop at the same time. Basically, I want the monitor to be my docking station. I have looked into some monitors, and so far, my ideal monitor would be the Samsung C34J791. However, it has Thunderbolt 3 technology for the purpose of docking my laptop to the screen.

However, my work laptop is a Dell Latitude 5580, which does have a usb-c port for docking, but NOT Thunderbolt 3 support.

Now, my knowledge about these standards are limited, so my questions are:

  1. Can I still connect my laptop to the Thunderbolt 3 monitor (with the supplied Thunderbolt 3 cable), even though my laptop doesn't support Thunderbolt 3?
  2. Will it transfer both video and audio, and charge my laptop at the same time?
  3. If the above are possible, are there any downsides to connecting my 'normal usb-c' laptop to the thunderbolt 3 monitor? Am I missing out on certain functionality / bandwith / etc?
Thanks in advance for any info!

It depends on the Thunderbolt controller in the monitor.

Monitors with older Alpine Ridge TB3 controllers can only take a signal from a TB3 source, not a standard USB-C DP Alt Mode source.

Monitors with Titan Ridge TB3 controllers can take signals from either a TB3 source or a USB-C source.

It's often hard to determine this sort of detailed internal information about a monitor though, so some research may be required to find out which one it uses.
