Time to upgrade and what to upgrade?

I am wanting to upgrade this christmas and was wondering if it would be better to upgrade my 4790k to a 7700k with a new z270 motherboard and ddr4 RAM. Or if I should keep that and upgrade my GTX 1080 to a ti version? Looking for which would give me more gains in gaming performance.

Normally, with that i7-4790K you'll see a much bigger boost by going to a better GPU. That being said, unless you're gaming at 1440p or higher resolutions, a GTX 1080TI isn't going to give you much of a boost over a GTX 1080.

EDIT:

In BF1 you'll probably see some improvements by getting the 1080TI:

What are the games that you are playing?
Some like better CPUs and others are more GPU intensive.
If you have a better-than-1080p or high refresh rate screen, I'd say go for the GPU, but you can also consider running an SLI setup with 2 1080s, if your games scale well.

I am looking to play AC Origins and playing BF1 a bit more, I do play at 1440p on 144Hz just wanted to know which upgrade would be the better choice.

  • ■ https://www.techspot.com/review/1267-battlefield-1-benchmarks/page2.html: GTX Titan X had ~25% better performance at 1440p than the GTX 1080 (plus pushing it above 144FPS average); the 3rd page shows even better improvement at 4K (~30% better). Also, while the CPU testing was very limited due to EA's "hardware changes" lockouts, they showed very little difference in performance between a 4C/4T Skylake i5 & a faster 4C/8T Skylake i7, so I don't think your current i7 will hold you back.
    ■ https://www.techspot.com/review/1352-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1080-ti/: GTX 1080TI has almost 100% identical performance compared to the Titan X in Battlefield 1

Haven't seen full GPU benchmarks for AC: Origins, but did find a CPU comparison (https://www.techspot.com/article/1525-assassins-creed-origins-cpu-test/). Basically, a 4C/8T Kaby Lake i7-7700K CPU (which isn't much faster than your current i7) was right up there with the 6C/6T & 6C/12T Coffee Lake CPUs; it was only the 4C/4T Kaby Lake i5 on Intel's side that fell behind.
