Time to upgrade?

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some advice. Wondering if its time to get with the times a bit regarding my mobo and CPU as well as RAM.

Currently, I'm using a MSI B85-G41 mobo with 8GB ram DDR3. I think the ram is only 1666mhz. My CPU is a 4670k. I did upgrade my GPU and PSU, so those two items are good.

My question is, should I upgrade my mobo CPU and ram, and if so, what would you all recommend? My budget is $1k or under I think.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you set for a while to come, however if you are determined to spend the money I feel compelled to help, lol.

CPU: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($374.88 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU...

No, you don't need to upgrade anything there. The 4670k is a great CPU. The only thing you might want to get is a Z97 board, along with a decent cooler to get some more speed out of that 4670k.

Also, another 8GB of RAM would be a nice add, to a total of 16GB, as well as an SSD.

Do you think the Z97 is enough of an upgrade to be good for another 2 years or so? Also, what about RAM speed. My friend has a system that seems to load games much quicker than mine, I have an SSD, he has a 7200 HD. His RAM is faster and CPU is a bit faster. I'm not upgrading to just get a faster loading pc, I have just seen some games run less than what I think they should be.
I am also interested to meet the recommended specs for some of the upcoming titles.

Thanks for your response.

I agree with Elias the CPU is good, I don't think changing the motherboard is worth the hassle unless the Z97 model your upgrading to has a feature your current motherboard doesn't have. Adding more RAM... again I don't really see the value there. Adding a SSD would be a nice upgrade and I would recommend getting a 240GB to 256GB model.

You said you upgraded the GPU and power supply what did you upgrade to?

The H81 would be just as fine as long as you don't want to OC. With a Z97, you could squeeze every single frame from that CPU, but definitely not necessary.
For the RAM, with the 16GB you would have the future proofing, since the minimum requirement in new games are 8GB. Won't affect performance though.

I upgraded to a GTX 980 TI and 850 gold rated PSU.

Then you're set for many years. As long as the PSU is good (which i assume) you don't need to upgrade anything!

Edit: Don't forget the SSD though, it's a great add.

This rig would give you a maximum of 10 FPS boost in games. The only thing better would be rendering, boot times, load times for apps and more USB slots.
Wouldn't say that's worth for $900.

Ha - Don't you love spending other people's $$ ?!

Thank you for putting this together. Is the CPU cooler enough? I have Corsair liquid cooler on my CPU currently, but the fans never shut off, so it's insanely loud.

I'm on the other side of that, there seems to be an unwritten rule I just make the money my woman gets to spend it, lol.

Yes the cooler should be okay, but you can go to a liquid cooler if you want too.
