Tired of waiting

So i originally wanted to wait for the new maxwell stuff and get a 880gtx but since nvidia is d*cking us around and now that i have the money saved up im thinking of getting something now. I normally only buy classified cards if im buying nvidia so that means i buy from evga. The 780ti is what i've had my eye on for some time now but we all hear rumors of this or that and maybe a 790 or maybe a higher than 3gb version of the 780ti and know im reluctant to buy. I want to upgrade i REALLY DO but the fact that current cards get such low fps in games such as crysis 3 makes me think this generation of cards isnt worth buying into. What do you guys think? I'm normally giving lots of advice here on toms but now im questioning my buying intelligence and require some assistance. So what you guys got for me?

Oh and i also was looking into the kingpin version of the 780ti because of the unlocked voltage and of course the special edition cooler. The regular classified 780ti from reviews has alot more room to go in terms of overclocking before it hits its limits on the air cooler so for me an unlocked card sounds pretty nice. Thats what i've loved about my current 560ti classified is its ability to put out such great performance with being over clocked.

When the first Crysis released, people pumped money into tri-fire setups just to try and max out the game.

Do not measure worth of a graphics card by 1 or 2 games.

Depending on your resolution the GTX780 / R9 290 is good enough for ANY game at 1080p with settings maxed out.

well the 780 and 290 arent really an option for me. Maybe if i was thinking of doing 780 in sli perhaps but then i could do that with the 780ti also.

And how long will i have to save? Everyone thought maxwell was gonna be announced at CES which it wasn't when nvidia did their conference they just talked about crap noone cares about lol. Plus when they do release im understanding i dont want a first gen anyway so heck i could be waiting until december or later of this year right? Ugh i dunno I mean waiting for the simple fact of price drops is a eye catching idea but im lost.......

My little engine that could 560ti classified has been a great card but its pretty much maxxed out now (still pulling 50+ in bf4 on high) and i dont even dare try crysis 3 on it lol. It shall go into my hall of fame shelf of computer parts lol.

Why is the GTX780 not for you?
The GTX780ti is EXTREMELY overprice.

If you're an extreme gamer and want to get fps as highas possible, go for a 780ti SLI. Even two Titans in SLI make Crysis 3 jump over 70+ fps. The 780 ti SLI would be able to max out more. If you'd be waiting for Maxwell cards, then you would only be able to buy it somewhere next year. Go for it!

But the 770 is rehashed stuff which i dont really want. If im buying i want the newest stuff in my gpu and the 770 being a supercharged 680 i'll pass. Not saying it isnt a great card but still technically old card. Plus i can always buy another 780ti down the road when they drop in price. My biggest issue is buying one now then in feb them dropping $150 like the 780 did. I will be super pissed.

Well thats not entirely true. It troubles me and yes I know its only 1 game but on a big title like crysis 3 current high end gpus struggling to stay above 50 fps. That seems like either a poorly optimized game or a game thats ahead of its time and current gpus cant keep up unless in sli.

Well, I seem to have the same problem with Crysis 3 as with BF4: I can`t see the enemy quick enough. That`s why I only have 1 hour of play time on Crysis 3.

I`ll check what FPS I have on my R9 280x when I get home.

Do you prefer the feedback from campaign or multiplayer? I`ll set it at Ultra. Any prefferences for the AA?

I mostly play multiplayer. I know it'll do fine on bf4 but I will end up getting crysis 3 at some point. Right now at 1080p AA would be a plus especially on bf4 but I'll be getting a 1440p monitor eventually. To me "playable" fps is 55+ but can make do with 50+. Its just a big chunk of change and I wanna make sure its spent correctly with the future proofing playing a big role. I expect 24 months out of my video cards as I have gotten out of my gtx560ti classified nnow. If I had a time line for the 790 this decision might be a little easier. Maybe we will hear something soon on the 790?.

That's pretty inaccurate. At 60hz with V-Sync turned off visually no you cant perceive the extra frames but you still get the effect. Again with V-Sync turned of your GPU will drive for the same amount of frames as 120 - 144 Frames.

It's not poorly optimized. Crytek has always released games that way heavy on the generations hardware and make it obsolete. The filters are what are card killers. GPU's aren't being created keeping in mind that after rendering the game it also has to add these filters on. Take for instance the GTX 770 on Max at 1080p was 36FPS AVG, 28FPS MIN, 48FPS MAX. Playable minus the dip below 30. Remove the filters and things nearly doubled in Frames. Battlefield 4 is a different story I've defended that game since the release but truth be told it's not hard to see how poorly optimized that game is. I've seen people with 660 Ti's and Higher get destroyed on that game where as when i used my 650 Ti I had overclocked was running smoother and faster than their cards. This generation of cards are very powerful it's the extra crap developers are throwing into games that hardware isn't ready for that chew them up. Game and Hardware Developers need to work closer in hand to develop products that are adequate.

AA and AO are taxing. I dont really like filters Ill run SSAO but when im playing games im to busy doing whatever the objective is to notices how smother lines are and how well a texture has been preserved at and angle.

So after double checking all my reviews it seems the 780ti gets a pretty big jump fps over the 780.......Does anyone know or has anyone seen anything that possibly I have missed hinting towards a price drop in the next 2-4 weeks? The 790 I dont really think will have any effect on the 780ti and the maxwells worth buying wont be here until maybe q4 for the 20nm stuff soooooo before I click submit on this purchase for the 780ti classified and backplate am I overlooking anything?
