AMD has lagged behind Intel in performance for years, but it hasn't always been that way. Either company can make a breakthrough that gives it the lead ... until the other company catches up or even surpasses the leader. Is this AMD's time to introduce a Core-beater? I don't know, it's too soon to tell.
And even if Intel's Kaby Lake Core i7s outperform AMD's initial Ryzen processors, Ryzen could still conceivably mean real trouble for the i5 and i3 series -- which would probably mean price drops at both companies. Competition is always good for the marketplace.
Right now, I'm waiting for reviews of Ryzen and the AM4 mobos. My older desktop (I have two, both home-brew) is a few years overdue for new CPU and motherboard.
