Hello:

I bought a new Tomcat 815T v1.10 from Newegg a little over a month ago and a
couple days ago I decided to put it in a case and install WindowsXP. It
came with the v1.08 BIOS and I flashed it to the v.1.10 BIOS. I used a 1gig
PIII that was working a year ago in a W2K setup with the same chipset,
i815EP.

Anyway I installed XP and got a "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error but with a
few tries it got arond that and finished installing. But most of the time it
goes to the start screen with the blue bar and then a blue error screen pops
up for a fraction of a second and it reboots again, it does that over and
over again. Once in awhile XP loads up properly and it seems to work fine.
I used a new WD drive and thought that might be a problem and then I tried
an old 10 gig drive and installed XP on that, only it didn't get as far.
After formatting, loading files etc. and starting up it flips to a blue
screen and I get the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error. Tried disabling some
BIOS features one by one, the only card I am using is the video card. I
have run chkdsk etc., no help.

I did install W2K on the WD drive and the Tomcat worked fine. The XP Home
version is a new one with SP2 built in. Any suggestions? Is my board bad?

Thanks, Gene

An update on my Tomcat problem. I found a drive jumper that wasn't set
right so I changed it, repartitioned the WD drive and reformatted it and
started installing XP again. This time it did worse. On the first reboot
during installation I got the "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error. Now I can't
get through installation. I even put in another new 80 conductor cable. So
two drives, two new cables, same result. I ran every check disk routine and
still the same. Could it be the IDE controller? Tried email support with
Tyan and that is pretty worthless.

I really wanted this as a replacement PIII board because it has USB 2.0 and
takes the faster PIIIs. Please help me save my board.

Gene :)

Hello Gene,

Did you use the 80 pin IDE cable that came with the board? My motherboard
had problems with using any other 80 pin IDE cable, but the one it came
with.

I had another problem with my motherboard, that I had to Fdisk my HD and
format the HD with a Win98 boot disk. You can get a Win98 bootdisk here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/. Once I did that my WinXP Pro installed with out a
problem. (when you are asked if I wanted to convert to
NTFS, select yes)

My System:

For those who might be interested Tyan phone support got me up and running
again. First they had me clear the BIOS again. Then I hit F8 at the splash
screen and finally install continued then on subsequent boots I got in on
safe mode. From that point I had to install some Intel chipset drivers.
The generic XP drivers and this chipset apparently don't agree on something.
I had tried this before but the complete clearing of the BIOS must have
helped something. Also the Tyan setup disk did not want to run in safe mode
until about the third safe boot and then it took off and installed workable
drivers. After that, per Tyan support, I downloaded and installed the
newest Intel drivers for that chipset.
