This week was supposed to be a good week. Mighty No. 9 was supposed to release and we would have given many copies away of this cutesy-looking Mega Man hellspawn. Alas, fate is cruel and the release date was pushed to next year. Now, in Inafune’s defense, Comcept is allowing some limited access to an exclusive demo tomorrow. Obviously we can’t give that away, but we’ve got a pretty good stand-in for it: Rogue Legacy!

It might not be Mega Man, but it’s a pretty good alternative! Side-scrolling platformer? Check. Different characters and abilities? Check. Giant bosses that fill the screen with attack animations? Check. A hero with IBS and dwarfism? Even Mega Man can’t offer that.

We’ve got four (4) copies and here is how you can enter the giveaway for a chance to win. Tell us about your favorite platformers! Don’t know what a platformer is? Think Super Mario, Mega Man, Sonic, Wonder Boy, Castlevania, Ice Climbers, and any other number of games where you control a character and have them jump around on...well, platforms.

My personal favorite happens to be an old Game Boy game featuring Shin-Chan. I don’t actually remember the contents of the game very well anymore, except for the fact that he’d put on his raccoon costume from time to time and be able to glide. Oh, and all the inappropriate jokes and references that I really shouldn’t have been exposed to at the age of 5. Gotta love those.

Contest will run until 12 PM EDT on Friday, September 18th. That’s 12:00 noon. Winners will receive their prize via Steam gifts; a Steam account is required to receive and to play the game. One entry per user. Winners will be selected randomly from among eligible entries. Attempts to cheat the system will result in automatic disqualification.

Be sure to join our Steam group! The group is nearing 1,000 members, and we’ve got a great surprise planned for that, so help us reach that goal faster by inviting your friends!

We’re actively looking for volunteers to write community reviews for games, so if you’re interested, please reach out to me for more details.

I really haven't played a platformer in a long time. Rayman Legends has been on my wishlist for awhile now, but I just haven't picked it up yet. I spent a good deal of time on Super Mario Bros., but the games that came to mind first were Mega Man 8 and Rayman. I don't remember anything about the story of Mega Man, but as I type I'm beginning to really doubt that the plot mattered. I was probably six when it came out and all that mattered was that I was a robot mega busting everything in sight. As for Rayman, what's better than a limbless humanoid with floating appendages who punches his way through everything?

Abe's Odyssey! Is he considered a platformer? I'm sure he was jumping and rolling around platforms... He was / is so awesome. Those cut-scenes were awesome. The scrabs were awesome. That was a groundbreaking platform game to me... Then it would be Bio Menace!! Jurassic Park was cool although only played it briefly. If we're talking old school then I even remember Pharaoh's Tomb... that was fun 😛

I've been charmed by Ori and the Blind forest recently. As I was by Limbo before it.

It doesn't tickle me as mario or the mighty keen used to do, but I think that's more due to me being a jaded cynical bastard now rather than old-school mario being better than Ori.

The aesthetics are amazing as are the feelings they convey. The story is . . . well, there is a story. There was a story to Keen?

Mega Man II will always hold a special place for me. Fun game play, great level design, and awesome soundtrack to boot. Holding A + B to turn the background stars to chickens, classic.

It has to be Jak and Daxter for me. It's one of my favourite series of all time and it's one of my favourite games ever!!

Aladdin back on DOS

i have very fond memories of this game i used to split the game up between me and my sister

anyone could do levels 1-3

i always did level 4

level 5 was fair game

level 6 ( i think that was the escape from the cave) she always did

level 7 was mine iirc

after that it was fair game but we mostly lost at that point but we did beat jafaar's snake form once ONCE and it felt great

I grew up with Sonic the Hedgehog. I still have that Sega Mega Drive collecting dust somewhere around the house.
Later, when I got my first PC, I really got fond of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Come to think of it, that is the only game that I've bought 3 times: on CD back in the days, later, on Steam, and its remake if that counts, also on Steam.
Some of the best games I've played to date! Good old times. :)
To Maarsch: Ori and the Blind forest and Limbo were also great, big fan as well.

Maario 64... The sense of accomplishment from grinding out all 120 stars. Shooting up to the top of the castle and talking to yoshi. Great times.

The original Super Mario Bros. and 3 are the games that got me into gaming. The first system that my folks got me and my bro was a SNES with Super Mario World and spent a lot of time playing that, unlocked every single thing various times in multiple save slots. Then I moved on to the original Donkey Kong Country and DCK2.

Then sadly my love for the genre died when I moved away from my SNES and into PC gaming. I did play some more platformers like Rayman 3, Super Meat Boy and some action adventures with a lot of platforming like Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia games, but I prefer other stuff nowadays.

Its hard to pick up just one, i loved the megaman series since i was a little kid, i played megaman IV on the nes when i was like 4 years old, and picked up super metroid and symphony of the night when i was older. Those three are my personal favorites.

I loved mario and sonic.... so many wasted(?) hours. I agree with whoever said Abe's Odyssey. Very fun, was going to get the new one before my little apt. fire.
So much to do.... Why am I wasting time entering this contest.?. Must stop typing internal monolog.

Not playing platformers nowadays, I have to go back to my earlier days, Impossible Game for Commodore 64 and Prince of Persia, a version that run on my 286 with monochrome display...

I would have to say Super Meat Boy because it took a type of game and bended it to the extreme, I still haven't beaten it, but it's one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played

I'm not quite sure if these count as "platformers" so much, but currently, i'm really into the Megaman ZX games. ZX and ZX Advent are really creative, and seem a brilliant throwback to classics, such as X and Zero. Being able to use not only a remodelling of Zero, but also a plethora of other skills and techniques to take out bosses is what really does it for me. That, and the immense satisfaction you get whenever you finally get that boss down to one HP bar. Is it still considered a legit platformer if you're using an emulator?

Recently played Paper Mario on my N64 emulator, bought an N64 usb controller off of Amazon and played on it for hours and hours..still haven't beaten it, still the best I've platformer I've ever playeD :].

those always were some of my favorite types of games as a kid. i loved Ghost & Goblins, Bionic Commando, Castlevanias, etc. i think on the NES though Wizards & Warriors and Battle of Olympus were my favorites.

i hadn't noticed much from these types of games over recent generations. but this passed couple years i've found some fantastic games like Limbo, Outland, Apotheon, and Ori & The Blind Forest. was very surprised how much fun we can still get from this type of design. especially Ori & The Blind Forest, would have to give it a 9\10.

My answer would be Onimusha Blade Warriors, not completely sure if this can be considered a platform game, but it was pretty darned epic, lotsa of fighting, lots of interesting moves and not to mention you could battle people with Mega-man. Used to spend hours playing that game.

Having grown with the Mega Drive/Genesis, and SEGA games, my answer would have to be one of the Sonic titles.

Probably Sonic & Knuckles. You had new kinds of shields, new ambient interactions, the ability to snap the game on to either Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 cartdriges...

It's still one of those throwback games, for me.

Now, I hear it's actually available on Steam (which is great, since my Mega Drive and games were passed on to a cousin, a long time ago), so let me go check that out.
