I think AMD still has a long way to go before they can challenge Intel head to head. They may compete for the budget segment but I don't see them toppling the Intel giant.

Echoing the sentiment of almost everyone above: I wish it would (for competition sake if nothing else), but I'm not holding my breath....

Definitely not, it's a well known fact that AMD fakes some of their CPU Charts to rival Intel, and AMD isn't really known for making the best CPU's, anyways, the point is that the hype surrounding this new CPU is not gonna live up to what they built up.

None of us can possibly know if it will live up to the hype, because A) None of us have any direct experience with Zen to say for sure, and B) The hype is an undefined thing. Hype for someone might be the CPU that renders all other CPUs irrelevant, and for another fellow, might be a good, competent answer to the current Intel offerings.

Personally, I'll just be happy to see what they do, as my current build is getting a little long in the tooth, and I wouldn't be opposed to going to another all-AMD build when the time comes.

What ya mean AMD doesn't build the best cpus? That's not a fact, it's opinion. As it stands, right now AMD Fx have much better OC than Intel as far as stability and cpu lottery goes, Intel has a much broader success - fail rate. Just because AMD doesn't have the single thread performance that Intel does, doesn't make them junk and Intel best. Zen is supposed to go a long way towards fixing that discrepancy and Zen+ will supposedly be better still and on 7nm architecture it'll be interesting exactly how that'll stand up vrs Intel on 10nm. Even if AMD doesn't hit the projected 40% bump over current FX, anything would be an improvement.

Can AMD ZEN supply a better perf/watt than Intel 14nm, no i don't think so

Can AMD ZEN supply a better perf/price than Intel 14nm, i do believe in that

Honestly I wasn't aware of this hype so I don't have a lot of expectations but it would be nice to see AMD gain some ground against Intel for a change. Price point will be important.

I do believe it will be AMD's best CPU in a long, long time... Therefore at least somewhat worth the hype. Won't beat the best Intel has to offer, but at least we'll have a very good alternative.

Hmmmmm, I prefer to wait for the actual product to comes out first and wait for the review.

It's sure looks promising, on the paper at least, but, hype or not, it's still worth to wait for the actual goods to arrive

I would lean toward No. Mostly cause "hype trains" almost always run off the tracks. AMD is also desperate, never jump on desperate hype trains.

Is not the first time when AMD brag, they display some nice graphics (for investors and fans) with incredible (more or less) performances, and when times come, the real life tests are not as expected, or we wish to be. I really want to be wrong, i have been always an AMD fan.

Maybe our hopes are too high, to have a good competition on CPU market, like is on video cards, where we see some nice/exciting releases every year, and we see prices changes, better performances, improved thermal solutions , 4k, VR ...

I would like AMD to live up to hype/expectation. Competition is always great for the consumer (me). The thought of just Intel and Nvidia in the graphics market is a frightening one.

I saw the presentation and I honestly believe Zen will live up to the hype. Will it beat Intel's processors? Probably not. Will it offer healthy competition to Intel in the mid range category? Absolutely.

Will AMD's next-gen Zen core microarchitecture live up to the hype?

If the benchmarks show that a zen chip isn't quite as powerful as an Intel counterpart, but costs cheaper, then I think everyone will be satisfied.

Congratulations to our randomly selected winners starson and mikepm07! Expect a PM from me shortly :)

Our third winner (picked through the online raffle) will be contacted via e-mail. Don't worry if you didn't win this time. We have plenty of giveaways lined up for the future, and another Steam giveaway ready for next week.

Have a great weekend :bounce:

Even though this competition is over, heres ma two bits ya'all.

AMD have always been active in new technologies, and for many months (long time in IT!) were superior to Intel back in the day (90's), and occasionally these days release a little something which sets them ahead in the performance department.

The biggest issue imho has been compatibility. Which is why as much as I want to support AMD and am permanently rooting for them, I still have an Intel chipset. Intel is what the industry has designed around and Intel is the core of all compatibility, remember the DOOM 1 cheat....? You held down the L I M keys for godmode, Lotus Intel Microsoft. Well Lotus is out now, but I believe my point is made. Kinda.

So any new tech from AMD deserves to be looked at and we expect great things from them, as they have proven in the past to occasionally push the envelope and in fact be ground breaking. My only worry is, will it be universally compatible? Until that isnt even a question anymore, I'll be sticking with Intel.
