The Chrysalid, usually spot them when it`s too late and they turn your own crew against you and they come in group at the same time. What can be worse?

I have never played XCOM and know nothing about the enemies players have been dealing with all these years.

Chryssalid as it was able to burrow underground and hide from sight as well as leap extraordinary heights and move with frightening speed.

for me it would have to be Lobsterman (from my all time favorite terror from the deep) hands down!!
especially when you had to capture a high ranking (technician i think) live one on some alien base. Boy those things were some tough tank units! they could soak up a lot of damage!
It was a nightmare! i thought my hard disk would melt from all the load and reload!

The most terrifying thing I can remember was not a monster but aliens who used the alien toxin gun in the Apocalypse game. The toxin gun was deadly because it could bypass personal shields that other weapons could not and one shot XCOM units.

I would go with Chryssalid, but since everyone is mentioning it, i'll suggest the Tentaculat!!! This unit is like chryssalid (zombifies) and it gave me a hard time when i was playing X-COM TFTD. The thing that made it even more of a difficult opponent was the fact that it had a lot of time units, and during its turn it could move and move and move, and even though you felt you had a safe distance, many times it would reach you and kill you over and over. Great times great games (all the x-com and ufo games)

Frightening? I don't know about frightening as much as a royal pain. Here are my top three:

  • ■1) Ethereals.... You run into them, you're bound to have a Psionic battle on your hands. Getting troops up to the capability to handle them takes way too long. I hate my soldiers panicking, or worse: being taken over.
■2) Sectoids.... while not quite as bad as Ethereals, they can be a pain when the engage in Psionic combat as well. It's a good thing that the early game ones do not engage in Psionic warfare.
■3) Chryssalid .... As mentioned It's a pain to have a soldier killed by making them an incubator for more of those things. Once turned, you have no choice but to kill them (unlike the others where you might be able to recover them if you can stun them long enough to complete the mission and leave them in a place they won't get "lost"). As also stated, once turned, upon their death, you have a new Chryssalid to deal with.

Now that said, I do prefer the originals (primarily the first two) over the newer ones, but the newer ones do have their own merit and are worth playing.

Thin man as he has high accuracy when firing its Light Plasma Rifle, Impossible difficulty it almost never missed any shot.

Gatekeeper - because it spawns adds, it's attacks does a AOE (area of effect) damage, and is somewhat common to run into.
