Too many antivirus programs

My roommate downloaded AVG on his HP laptop and ran a scan. Now the laptop won't let him do anything. It just hangs on every keystroke. It shows the blue loading circle, but just keeps cycling back to beginning. He has way too many anti-virus programs on this computer but I can't get into anything to uninstall or refresh the computer.
Any ideas on where to start would be appreciated.

I've tried! Initial boot time is about twelve minutes and can't seem to get it to boot into safe mode. Not sure if he bricked his whole computer. I hope not, but I fear he may have!

Do you know where he got it from, some sites show AVG for download but have added malware and viruses to the download - can you get an OS disk and try to do a repair or restore to an earlier time?

He contacted HP customer service and did a factory reset. Lost some pics and stuff but laptop works again!
