Top 10 Jobs for anyone!

Computers will always rank up there, especially anything hovering around computer engineering or architect. Lots of work to maintain though, something many people do not realize. Many of those top jobs are also not 40 hour a week jobs, they're a lifestyle. I wish that would be pointed out when they discuss why these are top paying jobs.
 
They were also talking about Americans being replaced by H1B foreign workers. Is that true? I don't want to get an engineering degree worth 200K and then in the next 3 years train my minimum wage indian replacement.
 
A lot of companies are bringing those jobs back to the US after finding out the H1B workers aren't doing the same quality of work.

FedEx recently annouced major changes to their IT support model and moving away from India for example. Many other companies are coming back to the US again.

Dell for example has strayed away from using outside tech supoprt as well.
 
IMO the "top paying jobs" should look at where you typically will be in 5 years, 10 years, etc - not just entry level.

In my company, entry level engineering or hard-science candidates with a Bachelor's degree in electrical or computer engineering from an accredited university typically start at about $67K a year, higher if Master's or relevant industry experience. In 5 years, those people can be earning $112K a year if they get all their promotions timely. In 10 years, $135K.

OTOH, this is in the Washington DC area so you'll need that high pay for mortgage or rent, plus gas & food 😛..
 
Average page, not just entry level. If the job is in demand, it will pay better than a job not in demand. Simply supply/demand economics. That's why these jobs are listed as top jobs, they're heavily in demand and the supply isn't there.

It is hard to predict where you will be in 5 years, 10 years, etc. It really depends on the individual. Setting those expectations to say in 5 years you'll be making X amount and doing this/that is really unrealistic. That's something you need to consistently check yourself against to make sure you're on that path.

More likely it would be to state where you start and where you can go. The higher up the chain you go, the higher the demand is with less supply. For example, underlings want their manager's job. Multiple people rooting for the management job. Multiple manager's wanting their supervisor's job. Up and up you go which drives up a higher demand with a smaller supply.

Typical layout:

CEO/CFO/CIO/C-Level - generally 1 person person position
Presidents (one per division, multiple divisions)
Vice President (one per division, multiple departments)
Directors (One per department)
Managers (multiple managers per workgroup)
Assistant Managers (one-two per manager potentially)
Underlings, AKA Low man on the totem pole (Multiple per manager/assistant manager)

And that is why the higher up the chain, the higher the pay it. The job is in higher demand for that skillset and requirements to correctly do perform the functions required.
 
I still say it is important to pursue what interests you most in life ... you will likely do well at it ... be interested ... motivated.

I have had a few career moved ... military electronics to behavioural science ... to training and workforce development and recruitment ... to project management and contract management. I started working with "things" and gravitated towards "people" then "systems".

all along the way I studied and learned what interested me in life.

Iv'e enjoyed the journey.

I know a lot of people who went down a rabit hole in terms of employment ... so take my advice.

Look into what the role entails ... ask people about the job ... see where it matches your interests and abilities.
 
Most importantly, just because you fall into a job doesn't mean you should stick with it. Kind of what Reynod mentioned. Many people stick to the line of business that is paying them the best, instead of moving to something they really enjoy.

Listen to many entrepreneurs talking about finally making that jump from working for someone else to starting their own business. You can see the difference with that.
 


Yeah, not quite. Those jobs are generally all master's or doctorate level jobs and a university was the one compiling the results. Gee, do we really want to say go to a trade school and be an electrician or a welder and you'll make as much as many people with master's degrees? Heck no, we have $300M worth of new palatial buildings and a bunch of unfirable professors who work 20 hours a week if we are lucky to pay for. No, we don't want to use our billions of dollars in endowment to do that when we can keep perpetuating the Big Lie of paying a ton for education really does lead to better outcomes and keep increasing tuition by several percent year over year and have people willingly enroll!

The government is complicit in this as they have nationalized the student loan business. That's why interest rates went from 2-3% about 10 years ago to 6.8-8.75+% today. More people borrowing more money at well above market rates and only from the government monopoly leads to an effective massive tax increase that never has to be voted on.

Employers also like the education lie as they think they are getting a "better quality candidate" due to having more degrees. They also know somebody with a bunch of student loans that they have to start paying off RFN can't be too picky with what jobs or terms of employment they are willing to take.
 


I dunno, everything I have seen that in this crappy Obameconomy, it is better to figure out ways of making money and then picking the one that you like the most/hate the least. Unless that is, you really are okay with sucking off the government tit and being some pandering politician's bitch forever.

I am just a *touch* bitter at the horrible economy and overbearing (and getting worse every day) government, if you can't tell...
 


I rarely work in the actual cubicle like I have said before. Rarely working there probably IS the problem as being on semi-permanent call stinks. I'd much rather just go work a fixed number of hours and leave work behind when I get to go home rather than take it with me all of the time.

I think that would very likely get me fired or at least yelled at which is another problem. We can't have much of a sense of humor. Lawyers run everything in healthcare and anything that can even be construed by somebody who wants to be offended as offending a protected class is a big no-no. The only jokes the lawyers allow at work is their bills and that's only funny to them!
 


Funny you say that. My former coworker was fired because he emailed a link from a Fark website that had a funny picture in it. Later on as the email continued to get forwarded, a gay coworker opened the email, thought it was funny, but continued to read the user comments at the bottom of the page, took offense, went to HR, and had the guy fired. Sad part was I went to college with the gay guy and back then he had not come out and was the biggest gay basher I had ever met.
